Obviously with a suitable time in between feeding and riding, but do you get more 'benefits' from the food if you make the most of it's energy giving properties by riding as soon after feeding it as safely possible? I'm after more energy for my horse, but can't help wondering if it can actually make any difference if I am riding before feeding - if you know what I mean?

Generally it is better to feed after work once the horse has cooled down.

If you need more energy have you tried feeding flaked maize - it is one of the highest energy foods, often given to racehorses in the days leading up to a race.

Fitness level also affects the energy levels. Get your horse superfit with steady trotting work and he'll have more energy to do other things.

Have the vet check a blood sample for any dificiencies or for anaemia.

Work on his schooling to get him sharper to your leg aids so that he's not hard work. Also make sure that when you use your legs your mind is concentrating on getting him to go forward too. 'The Power of Positive Thinking'
