Do you feed supplements?

(got a horrible out of thr blue PM from someone on here "worried" about Broom in my care. His joints were mentioned.)

A Manly Man once told me on here, on the basis of a photo of that said old dog when he was a puppy, that he would not say sound into old age. Same dog went on to have a long and distinguished sporting career and is still dragging me about on a daily basis on his dreadful long pasterns.

Mine wasn't even confirmation based (he has grown Queen Anne front legs!), just attacking me with a sound, healthy puppy 🤷🏼‍♀️ He's three now and gets a clean bill of health so I'm not worrying.

Ugg people 🙄

Thanks @skinnydipper. Is there something your recommend?

I'm quite annoyed on your behalf, @TPO.

Omega 3 is a mild anti inflammatory. A therapeutic dose would be 100mg of combined EPA/DHA per kg of dog's weight.

NOW Foods Ultra Omega 3 has 750 mg EPA/DHA per capsule, EPA 500mg, DHA 250mg. The oil is from anchovies and sardines.

Thank you!

Brooms 3 now, it was when he was 5/6mths. So he's survived having an owner like me 🤪

Cecil has Onychotin and salmon oil because he has a tendency to pull claws.

Bert and Basil get nothing, I tried Bert with the salmon oil but it gave him a dodgy tummy.

Spud, the older lab has Salmon Oil, a joint supplement and is on a pain killer (vet one)

Mine gets the last tiny chunk of whatever biscuit I’ve dunked in my tea every 24hrs 😛
Plus joint and digestive supplements with a dry food bumped up with cooked vegetables, chicken and a spoon of natural yoghurt.

You lot are far more restrained than my clients!
The marketing for some of these products bothers me quite a bit. But if they're short on information about the supplement, proof of efficacy etc - I'm not buying.

I've seen the NASC seal for US pet supplements, is there any equivalent for our market over here? It's a difficult area to navigate for a lot of people I can imagine

Edit - "these products" to mean supplements in general, not aimed at anything mentioned in this thread

Older dog gets Different Dog cooked food, plus Antinol ( green lipped mussel), Riaflex, Maxxidigest, Omega 3 oil or Sardines in olive oil or spring water.
Younger one gets Naked Dog raw food, Maxxidigest, Riaflex, Omega 3 /Sardines/ The Answer ( supplement to ensure raw food is completely balanced)/ Riaflex

If anyone is interested, a great FB page to follow is Sport Dog Nutrition. Holly Barker who runs it is amazing and there is so much free info on there to help with different conditions. She is a mine of knowledge and occasionally does 121 consults.

To be clear, I rarely recommend supplements for clients outside of greenlip mussel for joints, omega oils in derm cases and probiotics and pro-fibre for digestion cases as need. I also don't sell any of these things so no "kick backs" for clients who chose to use them

Flax oil. Plant sources of omega 3 aren't as effective as omega 3 from cold water marine fish. The main omega 3 in flax seed is ALA with insignificant amounts of EPA and DHA. The body can convert ALA but does so inefficiently.
I feed this…

I won’t feed salmon oil anyway as I disagree with intensive salmon farming but this is great. Glossy coats and very well. It does have a short shelf life, so do t get gallons at once.

Just a note, flax is the first thing most repro vets recommend removing from any breeding dog's diet due to phytoestrogens so if you are in the minority that do breed just keep that in mind.
Thank you. Didn’t know that. But I don’t so that’s ok. Maybe I should hit it myself? 😊

I suppose it depends why you are feeding your dog Omega 3.

I want the anti inflammatory effect of DHA/EPA.

I don't use salmon oil.
