Further to my thread yesterday I've been looking at Balancers and also Pure Feeds, but at the amount that I've been suggested to feed (about 2.5kg a day) a bag would last about 9 days! Does anybody feed less than the recommended amount and still get good effects? Thanks

Absolutely not - my fella would be like a house! I feed the big fella 300 g a day of cubes just enough to disguise his vit/mineral concentrate powder and the cob gets 150 g of Fast Fibre to do the same job.

No experience with Pure Feeds, but I would have two fatties if I fed what the companies recommend. That's why I prefer to feed a balancer and add to it as I see fit.

I put my overweight Connemara on safe and sound, but he is on less than half what they recommend. I would get through the bag within a blink of an eye if I followed guidelines. I thought it would be wise of me to follow what the feed company recommend for once... But I almost fell off my unicorn for reading it!!!

No way! My horse is worked 6 days a week, schooling, canter work, jumping, hillwork. If I fed the recommended amount he would be colossal!!

this always makes me laugh, I assume their rda is based on the 'average horse' but when do you see anyone ever saying they feed more than the rda? everyone feeds less. The only time I ever fed more was when fighting to keep a horse with a medical condition that caused malnutrition. I do think that the feed companies have a lot to answer for, because generally those who do feed the rda because thats what it says on the label are not confident in their own ability to make such judgement calls and the horses end up paying for it :(

the problem imho is, if you are feeding for good hoof health, to get the RDA of the necessary nutrients, you have to feed what they recommend - which in turn, may add to obesity.....not to mention the fact that a horse only has a tiny stomach in the first place.

The balancer allows you to give a really good nutrient level in a small feed.

No contest really - I have recently switched to TS Lite, and am amazed how it's working for my boy.

I'm just thinking of it for winter really to make sure that they have all their vits and minerals which is why I'm worried about halfing the dose, but 2.5kg of feed is immense!:p

Nope! pony would love it... his waist line wouldnt.

If I was worried about him getting the right vits and mins I would add a balancer or powder vit and min supplement or a mineral lick.

this is why I like a small amount of a good chaff with a supplement.

I don't often buy feed expensive enough to have a recommended daily amount :D

And even if I did, and went on to feed the RDA, I imagine the beasts would explode
