my mate said to me last night that when she calls the vet she always feels like a second class citizen , like trash ! :D you see her vet has fab premises very very posh and the vets are all very "posh" , she has 2 falling down stables surround by a " seen better days " fence and lots of lovely mud. she thinks that everyone else who calls the vet has " posh " premises and that they look down their nose at her !! im sure thats not true , but it did make me wonder . lol. anyone else feel like her ??

See my post in here!! Yes! I am so unimpressed with Vets these days, I wish there was an alternative.

Nope....get on very well with my vets, always have a good chat and laugh when they come out.
I think it helps that we are both honest with each other about the horses and they get out sense of humor....:D

I do hope she feels better for having you publicly broadcasting her concerns and lack of facilities and laughing at her:eek:

I would imagine the vets are well educated rather than posh and they'll certainly have seen worse premises than hers in their travels round the area.

no , im not laughing AT her , just at the situation of , if you are not well off do you feel inferior . not everyone has super yards and lots of money . she also knows that i was posting this and was interested to see if others felt the same . i would NEVER laugh at , or be unkind to ANYONE , ( well there is ONE exception ! ). i hate any kind of unfairness or bullying . but i like to hear peoples views on things in general .

Nope. Never. My current GP vet has great humility and actually always comments on how great our horses look and how they're kept. Despite having mud for fields, turnout rugs only with liners if needed, not the greatest barn but we keep ours in deep bedded clean stables.

Yesterday one of the other horses had an abcess so we told landlord to get their vet. Mare was walking on toe and dropped with the tiniest pressure to her heal. What does vet do? Cut out her toe. Only found blood. Said give some bute and call me if you need more help. WTF? To make a long story short and with absolute approval of owner, mare is now sound and healing with proper treatment. This vet clinic is right down the road and I wouldn't use them anything horse related. That's just one instance of stupidity.

I had the vet out last night and I did feel a bit that way. I am a first time owner and boy can you tell! I think I was just paranoid because of that, he was lovely but no sense of humour what so ever! I realised that after making a few little jokes here and there and being left hanging! Haha!

Nope, i get on well with my vets, im sure theyre more interested in the care your friend gives rather than what her stables look like :) and at the end of the day as clients we are paying their wages and most vets are bright enough to know that.

It depends on which one it is.
The other day is the first one that's come out that I've felt comfortable with. He explained things and had a fab manner with the horses.

I was in 2 minds about getting horse looked at as she was looked at a few months ago, vet came out, did flexion tests etc, and yep she's very slightly lame behind, trried bute and there was no difference.
I did ask vet to look at her and he had a good look, didn't feel pressured for time etc, and he advised us to go for xray (going tomorrow) and I feel much more reassured as I was beginning to think maybe it was just me being paranoid.

With one particular vet I found he thought I was a bit young and silly. Then once we met down the yard straight from work he read my ID badge and asked rather sheepishly- what was I a doctor of!! Priceless!!

No, not at all. I've had mine on everything from private top end comp yards to dirt cheap farm diy. And from the horses pov all the important stuff is the same. I'm on an old farm now, & its never crossed my mind the vet might look down on me for not having top class facilities. The essentials are all covered, the rest is just for the owners convenience. I get on just fine with my vets.

No I have a good laugh with the vet and would be offended if they looked down on me for not having outstanding facilities. I think if a horse is well kept, looks in good condition it shouldn't matter not everyone has money to burn on fancy things.

No. I have a very good vet who will always talk things through, question himself and allow discussions in treatments.

He is a top vet who is currently re-doing the clinic and has a hugely posh/expensive/gorgeous area and stables! He is down to Earth though.

There are plenty of vets practices and individual vets around here I wouldn't touch with a bargepole. That's not for what I feel like, but because I don't trust their judgement though.

I know a saddler around here who is like marmite. Some people absolutely hate him because he will happily tell you all the problems with a saddle and does not have a great bedside manner... however no one will fault his work. I will quite happily use someone like that over someone who talks the talk but does an awful job...

Are the vets posh? Or just plain old professional?

:)

My vets are a well known Surrey equine specialists, they have amazing facilities and really wonderful, well educated vets. I've had them out to muddy fields with no electricity or shelter in the middle of winter, to run down DIY yards, and to my current private DIY yard. I can genuinely say their attitudes to me and the standard of care given has never ever differed, no matter the situation or the horse in front of them.

A few years ago one of mine ran up a massive bill, I couldn't pay it which I explained to them at the time. We arranged for me to pay as and when I could, and during this time I still recieved the normal service from if I needed them. They didn't care about my financial state, they cared about the welfare of my horses.

dont you think that its human nature to treat people differently, to how you percieve them ? or such . i mean if a vet arrives on a super posh yard he/she must make instant assumptions , same as if they arrived at a run down yard . one poster said her jokes fell on stoney silence , i ve had that too , bet if i was someone famous or kate middleton , he would have laughed his head off.

No i have to say all the vets i have dealth with have been fabulous!

They know me and my horses and we always have a lovely chat and they are always really helpful and friendly.

Case in point today - my big wussy Warmblood hates the cold and wet and has a tendency to colic when he gets cold or wet, well somehow today he was feeling a bit suicidal and managed to get break leg staps off and rolled and his rug ended uo round his neck and he got cast in the field! vet was coming to give him his boosters and she knew that being cold and wet was an issue so she thoroughly checked him and i have her mobile number in case of any problems as she knows what he is like!

they have fabulous facilities and we have a threadbare barn but they all love coming to our place!!

I can totally see where your friend is coming from but as long as the horses are healthy and happy i think you'll find most vets don't give a stuff what the place looks like as long as its safe.

No my vet is super. Always listens and considers things, happy to bounce/discuss various treatment ideas, just abouts manage to stifle his laughter if I bring up the next line in 'alteenative' treatment. We have enough mutual trust that if I say there is something wrong he believes me and takes it seriously, yet is happy to post me out drugs for minor things if I say there is no point in a visit.

We have had this too. Never care when it's paid, they know it will be and are happy to wait or split bill over months. Always come out in between though.

scarlet, my friend and i both get on great with our respective vets. however , my friend just feels that way. her vet has never been anything but lovely, but she thinks he must look around her place and think ugg ! i keep telling her hes probably thinking " wonder whats dinner tonight !" :D

As far as my vets are concerned, I look after my horse, call them when necessary - so why on earth would somebody (who I am paying) possibly look down on me?

My vet is lovely, and when my boy was seriously ill a few years ago, not only saved his life but used to pop in to see how he was doing, without charging me for a visit.

No why should I? I pay my vet to perform a service, ie look after my horse's health when I am unable to. Why on earth should they look down on me because of that - I am paying their wages. If I had a vet who made me feel like that I would move practices or not have that particular vet out.

For the record my vet is great and I cant recommend them highly enough.

I am sure they have seen worse premises than yours!

I don't think its human nature at all to treat people differently based on how you perceive them, unless of course they don't care for their horses in an adequate manner or are complete morons. Certainly not natural to treat people differently based on their perceived financial status, unless you're a snob.

No, I love my vets. They're good friends now after all the time they've spent here, and the time I spent working on a rehab yard taught me a hell of a lot so I feel as though I can talk to them in more detail about any problems. They know I like to learn, and that I like to be kept in the loop so they tell me what's going on in great detail.

My vets are lovely, down to earth people BUT I always feel that I'm 16 again (actually in my 40's!) and in front of the headmaster! Can't help it, no reason for it and I'm the same with doctors as well :)

Our vet is the old school James Herriot type, really cares about the animals. We've had him out at midnight in the past and been given a 'oh, don't worry about it' when we've asked about a bill!!! He is one in a million and we are lucky to have found him.

No, I don't feel like a second class citizen or unworthy, even though my vet lives in a big house and has a first class practise. Maybe your friends vet lacks a certain manner, or maybe you friend has confidence issues. Either way, tell her that it is because of her and other clients, that the vet is able to keep a posh house :)
