Do you follow modern trends, or are you old fashioned at heart?

am only asking because about 25 years ago, a good friend of mine bought a TB at auction..cheap n cheerful..it hadn't been the best on the track 10 runs and came last or last but one EVERYTIME!!

anyhow..at that time late 70's early 80's, the new concept of "mixes" were coming onto the market..and within 8 weeks of buying this horse it was covered head to foot in fluid filled wheals..it had numerous blood tests..nothing..was turned away for summer..was immediately better out in the field, no feed/hay etc..

i said to her then that i thought it was reacting to the feedstuff..or the make-up of the feedstuff she agreed, and only fed him on "chopped-hay" which we put through a chaff cutter..muscles like popeye!!..and soaked sheep nuts..which are just cubes of grass..

i'm wondering maybe, he too suffered form a similar alergy to your boy??

no way of knowing now as the horse is dead...but most vet's in the late 70's were "cow-men" and the general concensus was that he was allergic to buttercups.

Ah that's interesting - yeh sounds like it was a similar thing doesn't it. Have to say having a horse like Rock whose allergic to everything has really opened by eyes to what is in feed etc and also made me realise that, at least in Rocks case, he really doesn't need a lot of hard feed or mixes etc

What's wrong with Myler bits? Both my horses go really nicely in one.

Oh nothings wrong with them! I know many people who use them with great success, but personally, I dont like them! Its one of those issues that I dont see any reason in 'trying' it if what you've already got works fine. If it aint broke, dont fix it!!

Probably much in the same way that I love straw bedding, and wouldnt use anything else (as long as its not dusty straw!), but the majority of others on here hate it! Just personal preference I guess. All my horses and ponies have been ridden in snaffles, they've all been bedded on straw, so I see no reason to change!

I'm a bit of both to be honest. There are some old fashioned things that I do, have tried the modern version, don't like them, so go back to old ways. Other things, no way would I go back to old ways as the modern ones are so much better.

I check absolutely everything out though and love to research things which are todays newest fad - sometimes they are! Sometimes they're a waste of time!

" If it aint broke, dont fix it!!"

I disagree with you. Some might say take it apart put it back together and you often end up with an improvement. If you never change anything you do you will never improve. I am not talking about corner cutting and shoddiness, I am talking about being pro active in your thinking. I will say for the second time today....."If you always do what you always did, you'll always get what you always got"

Life does not consist or rights or wrong, black or white, but shades of grey. It's a lot more interesting that way.

It's like saying, "oh my horse has always done that" but just carrying on anyway.

Open your mind....you never know what you might discover!

I think I do a mix of all sorts. I think staying old fashioned and not at least making the effort to learn about new ideas etc is a bit ignorant. If you look at modern ideas and prefer to stay old fashioned, great!

The funniest thing that is said to me is "Oh you do that new wang fangled barefoot horse stuff"!! How the hell is a horse not wearing shoes "new and wang fangled"? It is the most old fashioned thing I can think of. LOL. It is just something that works for this particular horse.

I am forever researching. I love finding new info and I love digging up old info.

I can kind of see where you are coming from with the "If you always do what you always did, you'll always get what you always got" thing.....however, if what you have got is something you are completely content with, ie. a happy, shiny, healthy, loving, energetic and competitively successful horse, why should you want to do anything different?

I don't want to try a different bit...because she's happy, light and responsive in the one she's in.

I don't want to change her bedding, because it's clean, easy to deal with (I disagree with everyone who claims straw is difficult - it's only mucky if you deep litter) and she doesnt eat it. We've tried shavings at a previous yard, and all I can say is: Yuk! Fousty, smelly, damp and difficult to muck out, and v v v v expensive!

I don't want to change the way I rug her, because most modern makes of rug seem to rub her shoulders like crazy; for Ellie, the best thing is her Masta quilt with a duvet, witney blanket and surcingle. We bought an all-in one last year that had been heavily reduced in a sale; as a result, she had half her mane rubbed away and two raw patches on her shoulders. So I don't think I'm being closed minded about this! It works for me!

So you did buy some modern rugs then? When was that?

[/ QUOTE ]

LOL I'm not saying I'm against modern rugs! You'd be hard pushed these days to find an 'old fashioned' one! But the neck+body rug was not a success, so I wont be doing that again! Elz actually has a Mark Todd all in one for the field, and if that isnt modern, i dont know what is! I also would not want a smelly old new zealand! But certainly, in the stable, the older styles and traditions work best for her. I guess it's different for every horse!

I'm a bit of both. I do like to 'investigate' something before I consider using it. I don't like overdoing things, like stacks of supplements and feeds and rugs, and I don't go for 'branded' stuff. I think that every horse and every owner is an individual and that people will try/use whatever suits their circumstances best.

I like old fasioned stuff. Nothing beats going down in the morning and seeing rows of handsome clipped heads with newmarket blankets under jute rugs with anti cast rollers, horses bedded on straw.

I like plain saddles (havana) and plain hunter bridles.

I don't do deep littering though, and I don't like feeding straights. I feed a multi vitamin, mainly because i can't understand half the other supplements!!

Miz - My mum looks after my boy so I can't really comment - but our horses are always happy and I really believe my mum is FANTASTIC at keeping horses in a non-perfect situation. She uses a mixture of old, new and her own opinion on how to look after our boys, and it seems to work!
