Hey everyone,

Do any of you give your horses haynets or treats whilst your getting them ready to go out for a ride? Im just wondering really because a little while ago I rode Gypsy out after giving her some apple etc and she started coughing so much. Like it was stuck down her throat. I didnt know if giving haynets etc more harm then good? :S

Just want some advice really lol because I dont want her to do it again. I mean I give her a bit of apple or something when I get her in, and she has been okay lately.

xx

My ponio, just has one carrot when I catch him and then he munches on a small holed haynet, while I poo-pick, groom and tack up etc. I always think it's fairly similar to them grazing before you go for a ride....

I always allow my horses to eat a haynet whilst grooming/tacking up - I think you should put it down to coincidence/one of those things rather than worry about it :)

I feed breakfast and then tack up and ride. This weekend I have hacked mick both mornings. Got to the yard, fed breakfast, done haynets and put them in, took the poo out of shiney's stable - today I put him out - then tacked up mick and hacked for an hour.

We have always fed them before riding (hacking) and they are fine. I don't like riding in the manage after feeding though as I think its more intense work than hacking.

Ahh I see. Thanks guys, yeah im just wondering really thats all. Gypsy and the herd get there breakfast at about 8-8:30am, and then there left to graze with haylage etc. And when I ride im there by like 12-1 or so. I dont think im going to give her a haynet or anything now though because the spring grass is starting to come through too lol.

I just wanted to here all of your thoughts on it. Thanks guys xx

I dont let my horse eat when she has a bit in her mouth, she struggles to eat it then. Occasionally my instructor will give her a treat at the end of a lesson and she can never eat it properly. Sometimes spits it out.

If shes getting a good groom then she will munch on a haynet whilst I'm doing so, but it get's taken away while i tack up :)
She doesn't get treats anyway except polo's because she chokes.

My girl has a haynet whilst tied up for grooming, tacking up etc it gives her something to do - and she doesn't like the girth being tightened, so it helps take her mind off it.
