I often got mail through asking for donations for various animal charities and although I feel bad I admit to binning them mainly as I just dont have the money to set up more direct debits which is what they ask for

Today I got one from SPANA asking for £3 in coins (one off) and Im so tempted. Do the donkeys get to see the £3 or is it another where they get pittance and someone gets rich?
Does anyone give to charity and what do you think of SPANA?

I would say always better to give to a smaller charity - larger corporations have to pay so much for staff/advertising....I mean, a one off, that would be fine, but long term, find your local sanctuary and give stuff to them. Money is lovely, but they can always use a bag of chaff etc...just my opinion!
(May come from London beggers - I give them a sandwich rather than money....seems to be more effective!)

Its so sad isnt it, if I was loaded I would rescue them all, hubby said never mind giving to charity, get them to send the donkey to us, be a great companion for my boy (bless him, totally non horsey man)
I just get annoyed when the cause doesnt get the money and I remember something on here ages ago about one that was really bad for it. £3 is nothing I know, so I will pay for Abs for one donkey or so it says.

Our family gives to several charities however the thing that put me off more than anything is that as soon as you send anything they seem to inform each other or sell your details on. Next thing you receive dozens of begging letters from every conceivable equine/animal charity in the country. I put so many in the bin. As you have already said, you can't afford to give to every one.

I give to NSPCC through daughters school and i gave money and food to one of the rescue centre that took in horses from Amersham

i am the same, i either do this or buy the dog they have food

I do a monthly donation to the Essex Air ambulance (you never know when you might need them

)
Plus I put aside a certain amount each year to donate to one off causes. This year it went to the Amersham horses.

Yup, I give £10 a month to WSPA (the bear adverts make me cry

), £10 a month to Alzheimers Society (my grandad died of it) and £20 a month to Multiple Sclerosis Society (my mum has it).

And occasionally when I get the requests through the door with the little slots to send pound coins back, I do that too!

It's Herts and Essex air ambulance trust now for Admin purposes!

OH is trustee on Essex too.

I never send money off in response to letters persoally, I just dont have the spare cash.

I did (well me and a few others) organise a charity fun day at our yard and gave money to the Horse Trust the other month.

I will sometimes buy the big issue or give money to charities but I am would not say I regularly give to charity.

My parents give a lump sum to Naomi Hospice each year, for terminally ill children, and we train guide dogs for the blind and so fundraising for them
I normally give change to those pots and after the tsunami i gave some money for that...
So yeah guess we do ^_^
But if i get emails about it unless ive joined some thing then i bin them, most of the time their probably scams anyways, or hardly any money goes to charity

I'm very selective on which charities i will give to. I work for an international charity and the things that money gets wasted on is disgusting! I prefer to give to smaller charities, where you know that your money will make a difference.
Some of the larger charities, if you can give to a local branch, then its not too bad as the money will go there, but then again, there is a certail very local branch of a national charity i wont give to as i worked there and saw where some of the money went - yes - it's sooooo important for the staff to get cream cakes daily isnt it.......
I also recieved the SPANA mail at the start of the week.

I do give to Charities but I am very selective about them. I rarely- if ever - give to charities that mail you requests as many enclose 'free gifts' to make you feel guilty and give. To me, that is a complete waste of money.
I believe SPANA are fairly good with the amount that actually goes to helping the animals.

I bet I sound really tight by going on about £3, I do give monthly to the North West Air Ambulance and Christies Cancer charity.
Sometimes I cant look at the mail if its for charity as I end up feeling guilty.

I sometimes give to animal charities, but I will never give to human charities as that is what I pay tax for. I get annoyed when I see charities like the NSPCC advertising on TV about child protection, as that is what we pay the Social Services and Police to do!
