Do you go competing by yourself?

I want to get out to some unaffiliated hunter trials/ode but I have no one to come with me. I'm happy going alone - I usually go alone for dressage - but just have this niggle in the back of my mind that I'm meant to have someone with me incase I fall off jumping. Is it frowned upon to go alone?

Yes - I do. At BE they like you to tell the secretary on arrival. The only time I get worried about it is when husband is away from home so on those occasions I usually try to make sure I compete on the same day that I know a few local friends will be at the same venue.

Yes I do everything alone and sometimes have two horses and my Daughter and her pony. Did have a disaster a couple of weeks ago and was taken off in an ambulance. First time I've had a problem (and please God the last!) Only had my horse with me and she is impeccably behaved so it was easy for folk to sort her out and my oh came and got her. It did make me think I absolutely wouldn't do it if I had a remotely tricky horse (I spend a lot of time ensuring mine are well trained).

He is very easy and well behaved. I have a friend who is very sensible and safety conscious and I think she has drummed it into me.

Quite a few people do
U need to be well organised
And it's vital that you give the secretary all your info & contact numbers etc
But definitely don't let it stop you 😄

Yes I do and mostly love it. You can also put a sign in your lorry window with contact numbers if you're worried.

I usually do. I tell the secretary I am on my own. You do need to be more organised but if it's a toss up between going alone and not going, I would go. Things like having to get your number and hat tagged can take a bit of time if there's a queue or it's a long way from the horse box park. i always walk the course the day before if I can, if I am going on my own

Where are you? I need company :)

I go alone as well but always a little apprehensive that I'm going to fall off and not be able to drive my pony home ... Thing is when I go with someone, it's usually my friend's daughter who doesn't drive yet, but having her there makes me feel better anyway.

Yes I go alone. I hate it though. But I'd rather go alone than not do it.
I'm always pestering oh to come with. But he gets bored with the hanging around. Nobody else at my yard events at all - not even the low level stuff I do xx

Ah I'm Berkshire. You'll be fine- go for it. Make sure you have decent recovery. Mine covers me if I am too injured to drive my horse home- they pick him up :)

North Yorkshire.
Nobody I could rope in to come could tow the trailer anyway and I concentrate better alone. So just have to go for it!

I go alone. It means you can be totally focused on yourself and your horse. I did ask BE if there was any chance that people travelling alone could be parked in the same area but it is too difficult for logistics.

I compete on my own most of the time but a few years ago I had a cracking fall which resulted being blue lighted to a hospital 50 miles away from the event which was 70 miles away from home.
Luckily my husband was with me but even so it was a logistic nightmare as Husband came with me in ambulance leaving Horse, dog and unlocked lorry at event.
Organisers were fabulous and luckily kind brother in law drove to hospital to pick husband up who then had to go back to event collect horse etc. Got home at 2am and then had to drive back to hospital following day to collect me.
Not sure what we could have done differently but learnt the kindness of others.
Would put some money in jodphurs though as didn't have a penny on me at the hospital.
I still go off on my own but like others have said only because I have a very straightforward and well behaved horse ( accident was not her fault, she slipped over on top of me show jumping on slippery ground)
I still compete on my own, so

It's less dangerous than hacking alone because at least there are folk around to call an ambulance!

Is that PRP Michen, I didn't think about that when I was lying on the ground thinking the worst but if so I've got that cover too.

No it's equine rescue services. It just makes me feel A LOT safer knowing my horse will be dropped back to the yard if something happens.

That is good to know. Just looked and think I can add it for £15 which is nothing when you consider the peace of mind.

Do you mean cover that will take your horse home if you are injured? Cos if so I can't find it in the website just recovery if trailer is broken down.

Yes rider rescue it's called. If you have breakdown cover you can get the horse recovered from further afield if you have an accident. It's not totally clear on the site so worth phoning them to check. Or try the company Michen uses. I have to use PRP because they will cover all livestock.

I used to compete a lot on my own, I'd just always make sure that the emergency contact in my phone was somebody who could get the horses home. You'll find that should something happen folk will generally help out and sort the animals out.

A small correction super cat ,There will be folk who will always help out. I have seen this from all sorts of angles over many years. But one can make life easier by keeping an envelope with all sorts of contact details and where the keys to your box are and leave it with the secretary .

Where abouts in North yorks? I go to a few things on my own so if you pm me with what you are doing I can see if we are at the same things if you want someone to park near/company. If I go somewhere on my own I always make sure people know where I am/my times, and have all mine/horse/emergency details in a laminated sheet on the side window. Not had any issues so far but I have seen/helped out a few times if other people have issues and generally everyone around has been really helpful.

Tell your lorry park neighbours, too - BE especially, everyone is normally very friendly and willing to help you out if you're alone.
