do you give up other things to have horses? if so...what?
i'm asking because all of my xmas presents this year are pretty much horse related and my OH thinks i'm wierd because thats what i wanted... it started to occur to me that i never go anywhere to wear nice clothes so i'd rather have a new pair of cavallos instead etc etc... :D

thats exactly the same as me!!! I dont see at as going without its what i would rather have!! My husband (bless) moans about the amount i NEED to spend on my horse but like i tell him> i dont have nice clothes, i dont go to the hair dresser, i rarely go out, i never ever go clothes shopping!!!!! infact im very LOW to maintain!! Hes blooomin lucky!!!!!heehee
 
haha carthorse i can sympathise. my stupid whippet ate my work shoes but i have resurrected them and have still been wearing them- teeth marks and and holes etc- yet the pony has shiney new shoes every 6 weeks :rolleyes:
 
Whilst Hen is enjoying his retirement he costs me very little and I went crazy spending money on myself! Was forever ordering things off the Internet.

Now I have two, one of which is needing things, all the websites I visit are horsey! :D
Going without runs in the family, my parents have working dogs and my dad saves all his holiday for the shooting season! :D
 
Yes, in many ways!

However, I do make sure I allow myself some me time (I have my nails done and my hair done regularly) too. I try to make it as balanced as I can, but unfortunately whenever it comes down to it, the horses always come first!
 
Yep all the time, christmas this year everything has been for the horse. My Oh has got me a hoodie but its a Joules one that i picked out at Olympia :D
If i want something then i wait until i can afford it, or save until i have the money if that means going without then oh well.
The one thing i do have done is my hair every couple of months but thats by a family friend so not exactly expensive :p My friends think i have all the gear but i get stuff in sales or spend time searching for the cheapest place to get things from and if i want something for me its normally for my brithday instead of getting myself as i never will, id rather spend it on the horse!
I guess im lucky that i have a very understanding oh who helps me out (mechanic, so very handy for horsebox and car) and will pay for the odd treat. I have never been bothered by saving or going without, its just what i do to have a horse and they always come first.
 
im totally the same, unfortunately i get crap i dont want instead ( omg that sounds ungrateful, but OH's family wont buy horse stuff, and i dont have any family here )

^^ i can understand your pain. every year my OH's mum spends loads of money buying me clothes that i will never wear in a million years and body lotions from m&S- this year i put my foot down and said i want money for a new skull cap! i seem to have presents under the tree tho- really hope they haven't wasted money i could have put to better use :rolleyes::p
 
Yes regulaly go without alsorts,haircuts,shoes,clothes,household items like new carpet or pillowcases,holidays,days out,dont go out for meals or to the pub or even cafes anymore,basically most stuff non-horsey types think are essential. But I wouldnt change it for the world.
what irks me is despite all this theres alot of horseystuff I still cant afford, I'd like leather tack and a small lorry and dream of a menage,even being able to keep both horses shod ---they dont need it at present they are weanlings, but one day I would like to be able to have them professionally backed and schooled. I'd also like lessons. Non of this can I afford, I do it all on a shoe string.

cant you ask her for the reciepts and take back to the shop? say the stuffs the wrong size or you already got one.:D
 
like everyone else, no hairdo's, but then its so long it keeps me warm, dentist only in emergencies, not visited doctor in 15 years, no hols, some concern over next elec bill, have to cut up wood for heating with chain saw.
BUT.......... i just walk outside to the animals, they have lots of fields with grass, even in winter, i have great hay, straw, wonderful farrier, good vets, live in a beautiful place with 20 miles of off road tracks and four beautiful horses, lovely neighbours, no i don't feel deprived, i feel very priviliged.....;;
 
I did something really out of character today. I went shopping, for me! I didnt buy anything exciting just a £10 pair of jeans, a £6 pair of primark ugg boots and a £20 pair of "just because" boots. I bought a bacon sandwich and had one of those horrifically calorific Starbucks cream on top lattes. I had a genuinely lovely time! I even thought for a while how lovely it would be to go home, get tarted up and go to the pub. Them I remembered I had horses to sort. I was pretty :( about it, until the point I got to the yard and Dexter shouted hello at me, then spent 10 mins giving and receiving scritches :)

I do vaguely remember my 'other life' Where I had expensive highlighted hair, nice clothes and all the money in the world to go out socialising. I also remember how unfulfilled it left me! So as much as it drives me to the edge tramping about knee deep in snow, freezing cold and utterly fed up knowing I'm going home to an at best, tepid house, I'm bloody lucky!

I make MASSIVE sacrifices to have them, I have NO socila life, I dont really have the heating on and just wear a duvet:D I live in a housing association flat in a dodgy area, I almost never buy clothes, etc, etc. But for me its usually worth it, I do forget at times how lucky I am, but I am genuinely blessed to have 3 beautiful horses who give me more than I will ever give them!
 
Well kind of but it's not really "going without", we choose to have our ponies and that's what we want to spend our money on, and get pleasure out of, so not really going without. :)

Saying that of course, when we are skint, we have beens on toast and Badger has his usual spoilt regeam!
 
I don't really go without so to speak. Nothing pleases me more than seeing all the horses enjoying their lives. We have a fabulous farrier (who charges £80 per horse, they are all shod, unfortunately!), wonderful vet etc. the horses couldn't be better off. One thing that T goes without is a leather saddle. His Thorowgood fits him perfectly well and we haven't got around to having one specially made for him, he is happy in it though so we are in no rush to change it. The other 4 have leather saddles and endless amounts of rugs.

I am extremely fortunate. My father works his backside off to provide for me, he pays for all my entry fees, lesson fees etc. whilst my mother pays for equipment for the ponies and my grandmother works 365 days a year to keep everything running (she pays for the vet fees, feed, farrier, menage maintenance etc.). I am extremely lucky and although I don't go without I imagine somebody does (mother, father, whoever).

When I am older and having to pay for things I would be willing to do whatever in favour of the horse's quality of life, they do come first in my eyes after all. One thing I do know is I won't be in designer clothes, being picky about what I eat or be bothered about my social life.

Horses for you. :)

It wouldn't be fair of me not mention the people that do go without to allow me to fufill my dreams. Words can not explain how thankful I am. Probably all sounds really 'cheesy', so I shall stop waffling :D:rolleyes:
