We have access to turnout all year round although in winter it is only a small mud paddock that has restricted access (it is right next to the indoor school so you can't use it if there are lessons going on in case it upsets the school ponies hearing yours charging about).

Usually have all ours back out in the fields by April but nothing went out til May this year and I can see everything coming in early as well.

In theory we have enough grazing for all year turnout but it's quite wet. We have managed to rent an additional 10 acres for the winter but TBH it's not the lack of grazing that kills it for our horses it's the chuffing weather - 50 mile an hour winds with lashing rain are not uncommon here during the winter and it's not tremendously safe leading scatty youngsters out in it so they can be in for a few days at a time.

Current yard has 24/7 turnout from May to September/October (depends on fields, how much hay/straw farmer has).
In the winter they can be out all day till about 4/5pm but if it snows or gets very wet then they will stay in. Thankfully all the fields are large so it is only the entrances that get really muddy.

At the yard I am moving too, they have winter and summer fields, with 24/7 turnout in summer and then in the winter they come in at 2pm. Thankfully there is a round pen which can be used for turnout whilst mucking out and a horsewalker.

I couldnt go to a yard where there was no turnout especially as mine gets stiff when she stays in for too long

I am very fortunate not to have to use a livery yard, so I decide how much mine are out.
I think if I did have to rely on a yard then I would certainly not use one that would not allow my horses daytime turnout at the very least.

Now there's a question!! My horses have always been used to all year turnout. Would not consider anything else. If my horses have to stand in it is because I choose them too and not because they have too. People shouldn't run livery yards if they can't provide winter turnout even if it means sacrificing a field or two.

I couldn't go to a yard that didn't offer winter turnout, my older mare would be so stiff if she had to stand in like that. Our yard they are out 24/7 in the summer, can stay out all year if we want but mine will come in at night from Nov to round about Mar, will be out from about 7am to about 6pm ish.
We have masses of grazing though - apart from two top paddocks all of the ones on the same side of the lane as the yard have been resting since the spring, and the ones over lane will be rested from Oct to next spring as they get v wet in winter!

Yes we do, I would move yards if we didn't.

There was one day last winter when they were kept in because it was too windy to safely turn them out (tried and failed to turn them out as they were all complete prats) but didn't have to keep them in due to muddy fields.

Ours come in for 3 months over the Winter. We have a little corale area they can go in for a couple of hours a day. Not ideal but as long as he is ridden regularly he copes fine.
