Do you have banks in your bedding?

QR - yes I have banks on 2 sides (his bed is in the corner of his stable coz stable is so bit) rest of the stable has room for hay, water, ball etc

No and have not done for years. Only time I may put in tiny banks is if the stable was not well built, ie walls and floors had a gap to prevent a draft. Cairo will on occasion have a bank one side of the stable but this is to store excess bedding as he is on mats.

Jerry has banks as without them he is a messy b****r, Spooks doesnt. I dont believe they do much to help a horse from getting cast really, have seen a few horses get cast with huge banks.

I have a sticking out bit built into the walls to give them something to get a grip on

Cant ever remember not having banks anywhere I have been...my lady is on a shavings bed, rubber matting underneath but still a normal shavings bed on top with banks. My mare is an energetic roller!!!
When my mum used to do the bed for my other horse..I could lie and go to sleep on the banks she did - they were fab for a little kip!!!!
Mind you I have seen horses get cast with banks (quite substantial banks too) so it doesnt work for every horse...

I have banks but really only to try a keep any drafts out, pickle wears an anti-cast roller mainly because he can get close to the wall and if he got stuck he would be impossible to move at his size and weight. I would have to have such enormous banks if they were to do anything!

I've always had banks, but this year I'm not. I think they were too small to actually be of any use and just took of lots of space in the stable. I don't think he rolls at night, saves that for the mud during the day!

no banks for mine

. IMOP banks dont do much apart from keeping draughts out and making a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and moulds-I do like to see them though, makes the bed look cosy!

No, never use banks. For a bank to be effective against a horse getting cast it would need to be as thick and as high as the horses legs are long. Unless your stables are mansion size this isn't possible. Horses are not by nature a nesting animal, they are evolved to roam the plains and lie on flat earth, not live in something that resembles a nest!

I have one elderly pony with a tendency to cast, he has picture rail type strips about 2'6" high for him to kick off and he has never cast since.

IMO banks are a time intensive waste of money thay actually make the stable space available to the horse much smaller.

Also unless you turn all the banks every day they are usually dusty, damp and smelly.

I use rubber mats and woody pet pelletted sawdust bedding.

no banks for mine either.
i used to do them-about as high as their knees and quite thick.
i found straw ones stayed up best esp if yo use 'old' bedding.
my stables have those rubber strips along the wall that are meant to give them some grip to help them back up.
one horse doesnt lay down in the stable, the youngster lays down every night.

Nope gem used to get cast whatever size the banks or type of bedding - we built her a bigger stable and she hasn't done it since

No banks for mine - I outlawed them due to the fact they only work when big with fousty old bedding so they don't root about in them.

Two trips to the hospital this year means I am minimizing fungal spores and dust, so they get no banks, but do have 16ft + wide stables.

i cant see that banks are effective unless they are atleast the height of the horse when he lays down or surely he could/would just lay on top of them?

i bank my straw up big not just for cast reasons but draught exclusion too. my pony always lays down and she has got cast atleast once to my knowledge
