My 11 month Cav is booked in for the snip next week and I'm undecided on whether to have the blood tests done first or not. What do you good people do?

Thank you in advance!

Sorry, what's GA?

My vet nurse explained to me today that on the morning of him being neutered, I have the option to have his bloods done first to check he's healthy.

This costs an extra £58. That's quite a hefty sum. If it's important then I'm happy to pay it to ensure my dog's health/safety. But as my vets try to sell me their Companion Care scheme (at £150 a year) and Royal Canin (they have a fancy display of it in their reception) every single time I visit, I wasn't sure if the blood test is something else they are trying to sell or if it's something I really should have done.

For a young animal, probably not. For anything over five, I would. Anaesthetitic (ga) is reasonably safe but best to rule out any underlaying issues on an older pet, imo.

We sell a policy at our. Vets too (sounds like the companion care scheme). It is designed to do two things; 1 get people in with their animals frequently so that they can be more closely monitored for the health /well being of the pet (and establish a better working relationship with the animal). And 2 to save the client Money. Many people are skeptical, but they mostly are about vets in general. ;)

Diesel was 18months-2yrs when I had him neutered, they did do a simple blood test to see if his blood clotted in the allotted time purely because we didnt know his VWD status ,this is something Dobermanns can have.

We have diagnosed many things with a pre-anesthetic blood test, kidney disease, liver shunts. I always had my girl tested before each g/a and I always recommend it. Xxx

Thank you all! He's young, he's healthy, he's a good weight and he's from healthy, health-checked parents so I think I'm leaning towards the not having them done side.

You're experience is very much appreciated :)
