I was talking to someone at the weekend about Herbie and we got onto the fact that he hates men. The person I was talking to said how hard it must make life for me as most people who deal with horses are men. I tried having a male farrier when I first got Herbie but it was awful. I was hanging off one side of him twitching him, one of the farriers was hanging off the otherside of him twitching him somewhere else and the second farrier was hanging off his front foot Trying to get the shoe off while Herbs waved it in the air  These farriers were very expereanced and actualy breed persharons so deal with foals bigger than herbie  But they gave up and just pulled his shoes off and left him as it wasn't worth them getting hurt. :(
I now try to only have woman dealing with Herbs as it makes for a quieter life and a happyer Herbie. ;)
I have a female Farrier, dentist, saddle fitter, Vet and also know a female phsyo if Herbie ever needed them. :D
I was wondering if other people had women dealing with there horse or mainly men. I found it quiet easy finding woman but wondered if it is just my area. Maybe it's harder in other parts of the country and you can only find men.
No real point to this post. The conversation just got me wondering. ;) :p :D

My vet practise has both male and female vets, dentist is male (assisted by a female), saddle person is female, farrier practise has males and a female. Plenty of females around here :)

I don't think we have any female farriers around here, so I would struggle if I had that problem!

I have a male vet as well, who I prefer to the others at the practice! but luckily mine are okay with men or women!

hmm... well I suppose I could if I wanted to have all females but then your horse will never learn to trust males if he has no contact with them. If it was me I would be introducing more men into Herbie's life, not removing them completely.

I doubt having such an upsetting time with the farriers you mention really helped your cause too much

Interesting . . . let's see . . .

Farrier - male
Vet - either
Dentist - male
Physio - female
Saddler - male

. . . I've only seen a man ride him once though - and Kal broncked him off (and he just doesn't buck under saddle). Coincidence?

P

Hmm I have found Buddy responds with far more respect to men, although his back lady is great with him and he loves her. Vets are mostly male, and farrier. He's learnt if he shoves me that I bite lol ;) but he's a big lad and one female vet who came to see him was useless, she wouldn't of been 7 stone soaking wet and Buddy is 16hh of cob. Guess who was the winner of ''go on then you just try and keep hold of my ouchy leg'', he wasn't even being that bad or rude she just had the upper body strength of a knat, normal vet came and no probs as he held on the leg and bud soon learnt he couldn't snatch it.

My farrier is a man and the 2 main horse vets we use are men but other than that everyone else who deals with my horse is female. My old horse was not overly keen on men in general but she was always fine with my farrier and the vets I assume because they exuded confidence in the face of her ears back and teeth gnashing!

It's mainly men with mine. The oldie is good for teens & kids but exploits any possible weakness in any adult whatever their gender or ability. But she flatly ignores anyone she thinks is trying to dominate her (typical mare) which I think is more common for men to do, even inadvertently. Daughters can still be a bit fear aggressive so with her its more accidental body language which seems to happen more with males. She's fine for male farrier & vet, but tends to threaten any new farriers apprentices if they approach her square on. Also doesn't like one female vet who is perfectly pleasant but is large & has dominant body language.

My big horse generally doesn't like men much but has always been fine with my male farrier. He doesn't like the male vet much but he also isn't keen on the female physio so I suspect that's more to do with the things they do to him than their sex!

Wheels I havn't cut men out compleatly as such. My OH does stuff with him and if there are men around I get them to talk to him, If it were an emergancy I would have a man do stuff with him. He is much better with men now than when I first got him but it's just easyer to have women deal with him and he's happer that way. The male farriers did there best and actualy stayed very calm considering what he was upto so non of this is there fault. I hope it doesn't come across as I'm saying it is as they are nice guys realy :)

Either for me, vet who ever is sent out he is fine with either, farrier male but he is a cheeky sod for the apprentice, dentist male and he is fine with him but dentist is great with horses and pervious back person was female and he would try bite her occasionally (not normally when she was treating him just when she was about the yard) but was happy to be treated by her.

I could get a female dentist easily, not to sure on farrier but plenty of nice ones round here if he didnt like a particular one.

He doesnt like people who treat him without respect no matter who they are, he might be a pony and native at that but dare to treat him like an idiot and he will soon show you.

Either, haven't yet used a female farrier or edt but I'm sure I will. Vets I've had of both sexes. My old boy is an absolute doll to handle - for anyone - though funnily enough the few men who have tried to catch him (YO's partner/dad and a friend's dad who used to ride him) haven't been able to, he's never not caught for anyone else! :)

If I had to chose between the sexes, I generally prefer men to deal with my horses. They tend to be calmer, quieter and less stressy around horses than women.

Really? I've got the opposite opinion to that. My mare is much better with female vets and our female farrier than she ever has been with any males of the same profession. She is 100% catch, yet will give the slight slip, with a cross face if my father tries - then again most horses do!!
Filly features on the other hand couldn't give a monkeys ass who came to see her!!
The old Horse HATES men... it really makes his knees knock, and he has been known to wet himself in fear... poor chap!

These farriers were very expereanced and actualy breed persharons

lol I know who they are - my mate's just bought a horse off them :D A horse with terrible feet I might add :p

I have had both deal with mine - day to day is just me, farrier is male (there is a local female farrier, but I know her from an RS about a decade ago and we weren't exactly friends back then!), vet is either depending who's free, last dentist I used was female, etc...
