Just wondering, I am hopefully having a little Sec A delivered this weekend as a companion and general pet.

I insure my horse, but I know a lot of you don't insure at all, so just wondering what other people do.

Oh also if you do, how much does it cost per month? My horse is 22 pounds a month so I don't imagine it will be much :-)

I wonder if I can refer myself and get a voucher :-)

Just for third party by gold bhs membership £60 a year.

Minor things won't be above the excess of any insurance and I wouldn't put him through major things as he's old, hates strangers and wouldn't cope with box rest of any kind.

I also have bhs only for mine. She's 32 and owes me nothing whereas I owe her a long happy healthy retirement. However everything expensive that she could need treatment for is excluded from most veteran policies and what is covered I wouldn't put her through at 33.

Thanks everyone. This one is only 2 so its not a case of being too old. She is on loan and owner doesn't insure so doesn't mind what I choose. I knew BHS gold covered you for third party but I thought of it as in when you are riding your horse, as in it insures the rider rather than the horse. I will look into that as it may be a good option :-)

It's a good option, I think it covers any horse you are handling/ riding or under your ownership/ control (so loans included).

I'd get third party sorted asap as if the little darling escapes onto the road and causes an accident you will be liable, even if some lovely thieves break in and leave your gate open so she wonders onto the road - you are still liable (crazy rules but there you are!)

I too use BHS Gold Cover for third party liability for my 22 yr old ridden cob & 3 yr old Sec A, I lead the little one out and is also good to have in case you purchase a houdini and it escapes and damages property. I also show him in hand so always good to have some cover for when out and about.

We had a sec A on loan, then bought her. We only ever insured her for 3rd party. At the time we had a lot of savings, so only insured the expensive horse.

As part of my loan agreement for the two youngsters I have I have to have 3rd party. I would not want to be without it, you never know with any horse what they might do and if someone or something else is damaged at least you have the cover.

We have a public footpath up our drive and people do such silly things when walking in the countryside, I have public liability as part of my house insurance.

I'm a firm believer in insuring my horses but when I took on my old girl as a field ornament, she was 22 and suffering from an auto-immune condition and on long-term steroids so would not be covered for medical insurance because of her age and past medical history. I already had BHS Gold Membership which covered public liability so would only have needed insurance for accidental injuries and disposal. I decided that if she was hurt badly enough to require extensive treatment it would kinder, in her circumstances, to have her PTS than to submit her to painful and distressing treatment (the vet agreed with this decision). Consequently she was not insured. She was eventually PTS at age 27 when her illness finally caught up with her and the vet said it was time.

I've got my retired 23yr old insured on PetPlans "Horses at grass" or similar policy - have been thinking for a while now about cancelling but its sods law something will happen the minute I do...
