I was reading my T&C of my insurance the other day and there are so many flaws in it where they could rangle out of pay out for a lot of things and as I am insured for Public liabilty both my horse and I with the Bsja it seems pointless having it.So I was wondering what other ppl think.

My horse is insured for vets fees, and my tack is insured too. I already have public liability via BE and BD but wanted the vets fees cover. 2 of my friends' horses have had to have operations under GA and there is no way I could find the funds in a hurry if something awful like that happened to my horse.

Not having insurance is a risk. I choose not to insure mine but am strict with myself about keeping a reserve of money as a 'just in case' if she needed colic surgery.
For lameness issues, she's a mare I'd like to breed from so I'm not too worried about being covered for loss of performance and I wouldnt spend thousands on investigations.

I am covered for 3rd party through my membership to various societies.

I have public liability insurance thanks to my BHS gold membership.

My older horse is covered for vet bills. My other horse is covered for vet bills, LOU and death - good job too as she's been wracking up a fortune in vet bills over the last year...

I am looking at this at the moment after have a renewal of £440 for one of my two horses. I have BHS gold membership and so am covered for liability for that. Her pelvis and legs are excluded anyway, so basically it is front legs and colic and I am wondering whether it is worth that much to insure or whether to take the risk and have to pay out if there is a problem.

Decisions decisions!!

I don't insure my horses or dogs. I put £10 per month per dog in a bank account and £20 a month per horse. I think there is around £1700 in the account at the moment and in the last 5 years we have had to withdraw approx £400 for dog and horse vet bills.

We don't use the account for vacs and worming, just emergency stuff you would use your insurance for.

Yes
No way

I have a massive vet bill coming my way. I can't afford that kind of bill. I have owned the horse a year, so it simply is not a case of saving the money over the years that I don't pay for insurance. If I hadn't bought insurance last October, for him, then I would have saved just £300 - not enough to cover this vets bill, I can assure you!

Although I think I might go down this route with Lanky should he ever be rideable again, as he will be excluded from the saddle back. They'll only insure half my horse basically.

I used to ensure my three, but decided it wasn't worth it, after considering their exclusions, the excess amount, and the sheer hassle involved in claiming.
Instead, I took what I would have paid as a premium and put it into a savings account, then add a set amount each month.
I don't touch the money for routine stuff, such as vaccs/teeth etc, and small stuff.
And I have BHS Gold Membership for liability.
You do have to be disciplined with money, to do this though.

Yes mine is insured.Huge bill couple of years ago for a kissing spine op. This year sarcoid removal. The rottie is insured to - she actually costs more than the horse to insure, £550 a year but I am loathe to change insurers as she is insured for life with petplan and we have had huge vet bills this last year for her. I am pretty sure no other insurer would touch her !!

Our curernt horses are insured for death and public liability - have just cancelled vets bills and putting the £50 a month aside - tbh if either needed something major like colic surgery we wouldn't put them through it at their ages (mine is 20yo, OH's 16yo with a not too good tendon in front)

Just bought 2 foals to pick up at weaning and they will be fully insured

I don't actually feel I can vote, as all of mine are only insured for Public Liability.
