current insurer will insure frank (now 17) for external injury only and for premium + excess its not sure its an amount worth worrying about as its much more likely to not be internal. We have insured him for the last 5 years but he has been pretty good at not really needing the vet :).

In the depths of my memory I remembered that petplan insured for illness longer and have noted if insured before 20 they will cover up to 25. are they the only ones? Am not sure if its worth the premium though, I am thinking yes based on the fact that he is definitely not going anywhere, he is still very active (hope to be hunting a bit again this season) and given his type and prior lifestyle I would say quite likely to end up arthritic or something along those lines anyway before he hits 25.

am going to give it a bit more of a ponder I think as would at least need 3rd party or to join the BHS.

Just wondered what everyone else did really :)

thanks in advance. :D

I would say it may be worth it if he is still going strong and hunting etc

Not sure about veteran policies sorry but just to say that I have been with Petplan for 3 ears and they have been fabulous. I have had two horroe stories - one od colic surgery and a fractured pedal bone and they have paid without question, always answer phone etc.

Another thumbs up for Petplan. I have my 20 year old with them - I've been with them since I bought him at the age of 12. At the age of 17 he fractured his radius and they were great. He is insured for illness and injury until the age of 25 (I think it's 25). I pay somewhere around £25 per month for him.

thanks... good news :)

yes having looked at current insurance I think its not going to be much different/cheaper. Would def be happier with him still covered :)

I had my old boy insured with petplan for years they always paid out for any claims we made apart from when he was pts in may this year (he got colic) he was 25 and they said he was not covered for anything internal because of he's age i think they stopped insuring him for internal when he was 23?

I insured Ted (19 yo) with Pet plan, due to wanting him covered for colic and illness not just visible external injury. I think I pay around £30/month. So far haven't needed to claim but I feel very reassured to know that if he came down with colic, as he did a while back, that he's covered and could have surgery etc if needed. I would struggle to pay several £1000's for treatment otherwise!

My 20 year old lad is still insured with NFU for pretty much everything except loss of use. I pay £35 a month mind you but I don't think this has gone up over past couple of years by more than a pound or so. I think I will stick with NFU until they start hiking the premiums then will have to decide whether to continue. My last horse was insured for 18 years (no claims made) until the insurer (can't remember which one) would only cover him for accidental injury so at that point I stopped and took out BHS membership to get the third party cover.

I insured a 18 yo pony with Pet Plan when they brought out this policy - within 3 months he went lame and they paid up to the 5k limit without question.

First years premium was £348 and the renewal is £386 - not bad IMHO.
Also if you go through Quidco you can get cashback ;)

Just for example, NFU wanted over £400pa for my other horse who is only 14 yo....same value, same class of use, no claims etc
