We did put ours out in pairs but one of the girls moved yard so all 3 go out together now - a TB, 14.2 and Shetland

Used 2 be 3 geldings in one feild and 4 mares in the other than one of the geldings was PTS so they all went out together and now we have another gelding but they are just in a big herd of 7

At our yard all the mares are out in one group and all the geldings in another. They are much bigger groups than the previous yard I was at. Jenny definitely prefers the bigger groups. Personally I wouldn't necessarily segregate the sexes - I've been on yards with mixed herds and it doesn't really make any difference IMO.

In a mixed herd of around 15. Works fine as there is plenty of space and new additions to the herd are quite rare. They just group together in smaller herds and all seem very contented.

With my three, which I keep at home, two come in at night in the winter, one stays out because he is happier that way, but he spends the night in a paddock next to the stable yard so he can see and hear the others. During the day two are in a paddock together, and the other is on his own because he needs more grass, and is a rug wrecker! In the summer they are out 24/7.

our 3(now 2) went together in a 7 acre field all year 24/7 except our 12.2hh who was bullied so kept her i an acre paddock and stabled at night.

yearling is on his own as he's not long been cut, big mare and gelding are together and little sh!t pone is tethered on his own! hopefully moving soon to different fields so i'm hoping to be able to swap them about a bit as the 2 biggies are way too attatched to eachother and he gets really stressed when she goes out.

George goes out with 2 other geldings in a large-ish paddock. From March - Nov he is out for about 9-10hrs a day and in the winter for 4-5hrs every day whatever the weather.

Both of ours are in herds.

My pony lives with a herd of shetland ponies and other Laminitic ponies in a starvation paddock. But my mum's horse lives in a field with a bit more grass with 3 other horses.

My boy is out with 1 or 2 others, either sex. He only has turn out in the summer atm, and is out during the day three days a week so the horse/pony changes each time he goes out. He seems fairly happy, doesn't really interact with them but doesn't like being out on his own.

My 2 horses are out together during the day and at night one of them is moved into a smaller paddock (he gets fat), but they're still out 24/7. One of the ponies is out on his own just now as one of my old ponies has come down with laminitis which is devastating (he's gone thin lately so possibly cushings caused

), they have been out together til now. I do put him in with the ponies sometimes or with one of the horses for some playtime, as I hate them being on their own. The 2 veteran ponies (the one lami one) are currently in the hardcored yard together, the shetland lives in there permanently as she cant have any grass ever again.

I only bring one of mine in if need be, for example for health reasons or if we have an event early the next day.

By choice Id like all mine to live out together as a herd which is what I always used to do, but sadly with 5 very different horses with very different needs, this isnt possible.

ours at the moment are in spilt herds to run with different stallions and the colts are out together.

in winter all the girls will go out together and all the boys out together foal and yarlings come in

There has been another thread regards this and i was told it is not done so find it interesting. Are you in the u.k.? What breed are they?

where i work and keep my filly is a small riding school. we have lots of smaller paddocks so ours are kept in pairs or on their own, then we have a group of 4 mares in a larger paddock (which includes my filly) we have a very anti social and aggressive gelding that is in a field on his own. another mare that is a short term stay so is on isolation alone. which she's fine with.
no mixed sex groups or pairs.
seems to work well for us

In a herd of 10, 2 geldings and 8 mares ages ranging from 1 to 22. In winter they are in over night, in summer out 24/7, but previously she has been turned out on her own and in a pair. When she was on her own she was fairly settled, but she never seemed 'happy', she always looked a bit dull and depressed.

Out in the herd she is a million times better, relaxed about leaving them and going back out and just chilled in general.

The worst was when she was out in a pair, she got really over attatched, nappy out hacking, and panicking if her friend went out of sight.

I have two together in one field and 4 ponies in another in summer so I can monitor their weight. In winter they all go in together.

My three mares all live together in a herd, and the gelding in the next door field is part of the herd too.
My two youngsters have both been in with my old TB since they were weaned...and it works very well - they've all bonded with each other, in bad weather they stand stuck together (I have trouble rugging just one as I have to squash between them), and they mutually groom each other.
No arguments or fights to speak of - my old TB rules them with mere threats alone.

Spot, Billy and Floyd are all together and Dolly has to go out by herself as she is a fat moo and is not allowed any grass. In the winter Dolly was out with them.

We try to keep ours in a herd, mares and geldinsg all together. However, at the moment we have the four mares in one small paddock, and the two geldings in one large paddock. This is simply to do with the size of the animals and the amount of grazing they need (or don't need!)

Our mares are out together, when we were at a livery yard years ago they were in a mixed herd and the old Appy nearly killed a gelding who was trying to get too friendly with her best friend. The girls seem very happy together and interact with the gelding next door who lives on his own. They also live with a sheep who is stabled with the black and white cob overnight in winter.

Mares and geldings in small groups in seperate fields. Don't think there's more than 5 in a field.

Summer turnout 24/7 and in winter turned out in the day and in at night

Mine has been in a mixed herd, in a single pair and mixed pair and also on his own. I prefer him in a pair either mixed or single sex, tbh preferably a mare as he is a typical gelding and will hooli around for hours with other boys, often leading to diaster. A small three horse group would not worry me but anything bigger always ends in disaster for us too and I will never put him on his own again, he is too sociable for that.
