Visited friend today who has just bought a 12'2 pony for her daughter. When I stood by the pony in the yard I said she felt very tall for a 12'2 we didn't have a measuring stick but used the weigh / height measure tape & she came up 13'1 every time. Now I know these arn't always accurate but other owners came by in the DIY yard and we had a sample "measure of other horses" And it was surprising how many came in short or tall compared to the actual "owners" purchase heights on passports etc. Just got me thinking if anyone had actually had their horses height queried at a show or competion and does it really matter.........
However after saying this if the height on a passport is clearly wrong does the owner have a responsibility to change or report this if selling on...?

No my horse measures 16.2 but looks bigger than other 16.2s on yard so not really sure if he just looks bigger because he stand with head held very high or if he is genuinly taller at wither

QR- What a coincedence i measured my horse at the weekend. He's 16.1hh on his passport but measures a fraction under 16.1hh so say 16 and a bit hands high? Not too bad guess

I would think the owner would be best to change the height on the passport to save future hassle??

My friend has a Welsh Cob with no withers, if you put a stick to him he measures about 14.1 because of this, but he rivals my 15hh Welsh...different build

My mare has a JMB life certificate of 157.2cm. I reckon that should make her just under 15.2?

Stick on her recently had her at nearly 16hh - go figure!

My 4 yr old pony measured by me when she arrived at 13.3 without shoes - I'm hoping she'll measure officially at 14hh or over at end of year so we can event next season - she's a superstar......!

horses heights actually vary by an inch at one point in the day and another, depends on how relaxed the horse is, the abdominal muscle are.. and other stuff. The hroses barrel is like a sausage held in place by ligaments that move, up down side to side.

Oh and Cato look and rides 17hh but is only 16.2

157.2 is about 15.3

My mare had an annual height cert for 153.9 cm so ever so slightly over 15HH (ironic since she was bred for workers) so I reckon she's 15HH 1 now.

Bedlam - I wouldn't be worrying there is a 138 with a LHC in our area who has won BE with no questions asked when the next w/end it's competing in a BSJA 138 class!

We have measured ours at 14.2 full up & yet we have seen so many competing that are much bigger but still classed as 14.2. The JMB are now clamping down on that sort of thing but what is fair? Many fantastic ponies go under the radar just becaused they are 1cm over the height.

Star is another who looks bigger than she really is. She comes under the stick at 14.2, but looks 15hh. She is a dales cross, so has plenty of muscle and bone, but not a wither to her name. If withers came in bra sizes, she'd be a 32 AAAA! But when she is stood next to a true 15.1hh cob, you can see she is shorter than she looks.

No is the answer!! I got Milly from a friend, who bought her for a dealer who had advertised her as 15.2hh. Now we have a 15.2h and a 16.h on our yard and she is bigger than both of them! We don't have a measuring stick, and i guess it doesn't really matter but on her insurance i out her down as 16.1h as she is bigger than my friends 16.h but smaller than her 16.2h!!! Now i really want to get a measuring stick, trip to the shops on Saturday methinks!

Measure both of mine at the weekend as Ari needs a LW rug for his week away in the field.

FB is 15.1hh - not mentioned on his passport because, strangely enough, it isn't part of the description here.

Ari is 16hh and I was sold him as 160cm, which he is a smidge over at about 163cm. He looks tall because he has such long legs compared to any of the other horses he stands next to.

I fully expected Ari to be shorter than he is, as people here are prone to exaggerate their horse's height - we think they measure to the top of the ears!

Shamefully i've never actually measured either of mine. Bought my mare as 16.1 but i'm the pope if she's actually that anymore. I just guess at 16.3. My lad well i bought him off a mate, reckon about 15.3.
Hmm not really a responsible horse owner am i

Bit thick this but can i just measure with a tape measure and convert at later stage?

The vet measured mine the other day for his registration and passport to go affiliated. He's half a centimetre under 16.2hh which is about what I thought, but it'd be interesting to put him on proper perfectly level ground and all that. He was, however, only 16 hands when I bought him off the track and I was praying he would grow to 16.2hh at least

So I was happy when that came up..also means that (over here) he can compete in te 16.1hh and over showing classes..rather than the under.

Yup

.

I have a measuring stick, which is one of the most popular and borrowed items on the yard (apart from brushes nd wheelbarrows lol)

Dizz is a smidge under 16.2hh, but looks bigger. I don't think she rides big though. Big Cob is 15hh, but rides bigger

.

When I bought Tiggy she was advertised as 16hh - I thought she was smaller, the owner offered to measure whilst I was there, but I wasn't that bothered. When she died a year later she was 15.2hh. The photographs show that she was on the smaller side. Didn't matter though, she was so full of life and character that she would have gone anywhere and done anything

No idea as I've not got a measuring stick, he was sold as 15.2hh, but the vet guesstimated at a touch under that at about 15.1hh but because he's a chunky monkey he probably seems bigger. My mums mare, again sold to us as 15.2hh, but definitely seems smaller than my gelding, but then she is alot finer boned so I suppose isn't necessarily smaller- just looks that way.
Would be interested what a measuring stick would say tho!

Archie's 16.2 on his passport and my friend's horse that I'm in charge of at the moment is 16.3. We've never measured them but there's probably about an inch and a half between them. I reckon Arch is more like 16.3 (with quite a high wither) and Monty (with a normal wither) about 17.1. They're both ISH types but to ride they're completely different. Monty feels huge but Archie feels a lot smaller than he is. He has a very short stride and I don't find that he rides much bigger than my old boy who was a 14hh Section D with no withers who rode much bigger than he was! I know that sounds absurd but it's true!

147.2cm
smile.gif

but only know that as he was BSJA registered at one point and I dont think he has grown since he was 12

and he looks like 14.2 and rides like a full up 14.2. He occasionally grows when something really scarey happens like a leaf moves.

We know the height of all of ours. Recently we went to look at a new pony for one of our sons which was advertised as 12.2hh. We already have one 12.2hh and this was clearly bigger. Other son who rides the 12.2 at home got on and confirmed it was bigger. When we queried it with the seller we were told the pony was actually 13hh but 'gets away' with entering 12.2 classes.

Similar to some above, we now have 2 12.2hh ponies. One has no withers at all, one has very high withers so one is patently a bigger pony than the other even though classed the same.

My cob was measured at 155 cm - however when I'm in the show ring the other ones are massive, compared to him. So either he was measured too small??? or there is jiggery pokery about

In a word - no.

None of mine have ever needed to be measured for Life Height Certs or anything like that as that's not the sphere I take part in. Also, none of them are for sale, so it doesn't really matter to me what height they are.

One of them (a retired broodmare) I was given years ago as a companion. I think, but have never needed to know, that she's about 14'2 or 14'3hh.

My three boys I have each had since they were foals/yearlings. I think (stress THINK) they're about 15'1, 15'2 and 16hh respectively.

And my old retired riding mare was sold to me many years ago as 15'1hh. TBH, I've never checked!
