Do you know your Horses history?

I bought my mare from a girl who took her off the track but she never raced. I don't really know anything about her except that she was bred in Canada and ended up at Golden Gate Fields. I wish I knew more.

We know all about my daughter's horse though because he had only 2 owners before her. He was bred and raised by a 14 year old girl who is still in touch with my daughter. It's nice knowing their history - it really helps to understand any issues or quirks they may have.

I dont know anything about Lady :/ but when i went to view her the dealer offered us sticks to hit the horses with :( and when she arrived to our yard she wouldnt let men anywhere near her and had trouble trusting people :( but now she happily walks up to anyone and trusts the people close to her :)

my foal is only 5 weeks old, buying him from breeder and i have photos from a day old, the breeder also gave me a copy of his family tree dating back to 1940

I have my boy's whole history. He was born out of a Highland mare to a TB stallion on a stud where they all lived as a herd in Devon. He stayed there 'til he was 3 1/2 yrs old. He was then sold and started by a lady who did a lot of breaking and schooling. He won several showing classes, did some hunter trials and dressage. I have pictures of him showing as a four yr old. I do have contact with her. He was then sold to a 13 yr old and did pony club, pleasure rides, drag hunting and shows. I bought him at 10 yrs old and he is still with me at 19 yrs of age. We have done riding club dressage, a little jumping and pleasure rides with loads of hacking. The only thing I don't know is his sire and dams names, never registered. Not that it matters really but would be nice to know.

My olddest mare is 21 years old and I've had her 18 years, have no idea about the first three years of her life.

I got her from a dealer and just got told "she's from Ireland" (aren't they all).
I tried placing an advert in magazines for information but didn't get one phone call. When I got her she had obviously been a much loved pet so I wa sure I'd get at leat one phone call, she had been taught to give a hoof for a treat and was the most gentlest horse I had met she was also in fantastic condition the vet thought she might of belonged to someone who had maybe died and the family just passed her onto a dealer.

I've also got her daughter so I know everyting about her :)

First ever pony I was bought was at the riding school I was at, gorgeous flashy looking welsh cross arab chestnut gelding. Apparently he was a green 7 year old, very reasonable price of £700 so of course we snapped him up! It wasn't until later we were given his 'lost' passport that told us he was actually just rising 4! Traced him back to his breeder who was heartbroken as he'd been stolen and sold at Beeston. Came to see the home and loved it so we were allowed to keep him seeing as he'd been gelded and was of no use to her! Unfortunatly we lost him after a year to colic :(

Second pony had a rough start too, the dentist noticed her front teeth were worn at the front which is usually due to cribbing but she wouldn't dream of it. A little research revealed her owners before had rescued her as a foal, then she'd just sat in a field going to a few shows but not really succeding. Apparently they couldn't ride her mother as she'd just roll! Fantastic mare with a huge jump once she'd got the hang of her legs! Took to hunting like duck to water, had a foal then unfortunatly had to be sold as she was only 13.1 and I'm 5'8. We still keep in touch with them, though.

Next was my 15hh connemara. Stunning looking gelding, bought at 7 quite green at jumping. Sam had qualified for HOYS showing before we got him, but was over 14.2hh to go in the M&M class. I bought him and had to show him fillers etc. Seemed to love XC, so researched into that and found he was hunted in Ireland as a 3 y.o somehow managing to remain unscarred! Smashing horse, now sold to a home for life.

And now I have my two. The two year old out of my second mare, who I've had since birth and so know everything! And Genna, my eventer, who I bought directly from the person who bred, broke and brought her on.

Would love to know all about ours, only 1 we have history on is the mini shetland.

Archie (The one in sig) - Brought from a dealer type person at the age of 2, was in a horrid state, covered in lice - caused him to have weaping sores on him and was skin and bones.

Lewis - Brought from sales at the age of 2. We have now had him for 14 years.

Mouse - We brought through an ad on Horsemart. He was apparently swapped for some cattle as the people who had him before the people we brought him from were going to have him shot as he was too big (he is a shire X) we think he stands at about 19hh!

Barley Sugar (The little one) - Came from Essex where an old lady had kept a little herd of them for years, little lady became too old to look after them, the herd then was given to her friend, who we brought Barley Sugar from. We also brought her mother Lucy from her but we had her pts recently :(.

Would love to know more on all of ours though. Think people who do know history are very lucky!

Bred my boy, having had his mother and the stallion at stud literally down road.
His half brother came from the same stud, who also bred him, so know both of their histories in full.
The little mare we recently lost came to us as a rescue case, and had obviouly had a bad time as she had ricketts and looked like a foal, but was infact about 5 or 6 years old.All we knew was she had been kept shut in a garage and supposedly fed dog food. We had her some 23 years though so the disastrous start she experienced can not have done much harm.

I'm really jealous of all the facts & quirks you know about your horses. I would love to find out where mines 'crazy' side comes from :D
