Do you leave a fly rug on your horse when he/she is stabled?

I must confess I could never understand people on my yard who did this, until today! Bob has just recovered from a huge horse fly bite on his wither (completely my fault, I left his rug off when he was turned out) and I could have finally ridden him again tonight. But when I went to do him after work he had been bitten during the day whilst stabled and now has another lump in his saddle area, so I still cant ride

So, do you leave a fly rug on your horse when it is stabled? I did spray fly repellent all over him this morning, but I'm beginning to think I might leave the rug on as well at this rate!

I leave mine on both - mainly because I've never seen a reason to take them off and I'm a bit lazy...

Is there a real reason why people put fly rugs on in the stable or is it down to persoanl choice???

I would put it on him when in the field.No idea anout the stable!!

hate to put it like this hun,but if your horse is getting bitten in the stable badly....as you say he is,then the obvious choice is to leave it on!!

Mine's got sweet itch, so yup, fly rug on all the time even inside; plus he's got a bit itchy around his face & ears as well so will probably be wearing a thingy with ears and a fringe down over his face! Poor old chap, but its better he wears it than gets all itchy. When we came back from a hack the other day the horseflies were biting and he just couldn't wait for me to put him back under his rug, its obviously where he feels secure and safe from biting things.

yes. then they can lie down and snooze and not worry about not being able to swish them off properly.

Only reason I hate having them on in the stable is my horse will always roll and snooze all day long, and inevitably he does that in his droppings *sigh*

Millie has hers on in the stable as she is allergic to flies.

Vinnie has his off.

both have their masks off in the day when they are in.

I had a pony with sweet itch - her boett rug was only removed to be washed or when she was ridden (and then she had the spare on or was smothered in fly spray!). Worth it not to have an itchy pony though, and she was a little super star!! So stable, travelling, the lot, she wore it bar the depths of winter!!

Fly rugs do get a bit grim in the stable, and then I worry that the poo attracts more flies!
Have you got a summer sheet that you can put on him - they're often more comfortable with a sheet on than 'naked' as long as the stable is nice and airy!
