My mum lets Poppy on the bed (which made for an interesting few weeks where she got quite possesive and was told in no uncertain terms by yours truely that it was in fact NOT her bed ) but she won't allow her on the couch....

Personally I'm not a fan of dogs going on the bed because I can't cope with sleeping with hair in my nostrils and in my face (she sheds like crazy!) but I'd like to get her up on the couch for cuddles occasionally because I'm soft like that ;):D

Very occasionally by invitation.

I'm not a 'dominance' person but elevating a certain dog gives him ideas above his station.
People can often be inconsistent, and not teach their dogs properly, and the dog cannot distinguish where he is and when he is allowed 'up' and not, why is ma getting annoyed with me when I was allowed up here yesterday.
Also, people say get DOWN when down means 'lie down' and the dog is usually already lying down on the sofa, confused.com.

Bed yes, sofa by invitation only.

She has brilliant RSPCA eyes that help her be allowed up. She is learning though and I only have to say 'ah' or point to her bed to get her to stop begging for a space.

She was allowed up as she pleased until recently but is adapting nicely.

CC - we use 'off' for get of the sofa, 'down' means lie down in my house :p

What CC said, the easiest would be ban them from the bedroom:p

Mine can get on the settee, the move asoon as I say "shift" if they did not (they would not get on) clear rules = a good understanding of instruction when given:)
They don't get on the bed (I like my bed hair free)

CAYLA and CaveCanem can you come train my mothership please? ;) .... hope she doesn't read this now ha ha! :o :D

Sandi, don't talk, I came home from a jolly last week.
'Have you let the dog get on the sofa?'
'No'
'Why does he bomb straight into the house and jump on the sofa then?'
'Er...maybe once or twice...'

It is more than possible. I live between parents house and OH's parents house and bring the dog with us.

At parents house she is allowed on the bed but not on the sofa without a cover.

At OH's house she will run in and jump on the sofa to say hello but will not dare go upstairs. She knows what is allowed in both houses and sticks to it.

If you want your dog on the sofa, get a brightly decorated blanket, let he/she sleep on it, then when you want him/her on the sofa put the blanket on the sofa. This shows him/her that this is allowed.

If they get on the bed say no, off. They get the hint pretty quickly.

Our BT Katy is allowed on the sofa by invitation (I hold my arms out and say 'Cuddle!' and she jumps up for a snuggle.)

She isn't allowed on the bed. She has actually never tried to get on it, so we have not needed to teach her not to be on there.

When we go out for a long day or have to go away without her, Katy goes to stay with a friend of ours, Jean. She hasn't got dogs of her own at the moment, but used to breed & show labs. They were allowed on her bed. The first time Katy stayed there, she leapt on the bed and has slept on there every time since!

I was worried the first time Jean told me Katy had slept on the bed, as I thought she would try it at our house but no, she hasn't. She definitely knows that the rules are different at home to when she is at Jean's.

They have their own sofa. :o Only allowed on the bed by invitation when OH is away and I have to change the sheets afterwards because of the hair. They know the difference and don't attempt to get on the sofa at MIL's.

Yes they are all allowed on the sofas, the bed Dobes no the Lancashire Heeler yes, long story Pip the LH sleeps on my daughters bed with her, she is on holiday so Pip is sleeping with me. I am counting the nights until my daughter comes home, Pip insists on sleeping right next to you or sleeping on my leg so I awake with a dead leg.:( Hopefully she is going to stay with her dad for 2 nights so bliss I will be able to stretch out and have a decent nights sleep.

I currently have my Italian Spinone IN bed with me. She's an excellent foot warmer andshe'll sleep there all night with her nose poking out the bottom.

Maya gets to go anywhere. She is spoilt and I know it :D But as long as she behaves herself I pamper her a bit. She always sleeps in my bed and will decide between her bed(s) (i have several in the living room for the various dogs) or the sofa to sit on when we're in there.

Anya labrador isnt allowed on the sofa as she's just too big and annoying. She has her own bed in my bedroom to sleep in.

Evie chi goes wherever she wants and has a set od doggie steps to get on the sofa and my bed.

We bought a second sofa, for the dogs:rolleyes:! My own dog is allowed on my bed when I am awake only. It seems to reassure him he is still my secretly best dog when he becomes slightly unsettled by the attention the foster dogs get.

Another one who lets the dogs sleep in the bed and on the sofa, they know what off means, and also leave the room if told to. Very cosy, especially in winter. Three of them prefer to sleep downstairs anyway, and come up in the morning to let us know they need out, etc. We generally have a few of the cats in with us too. They are not allowed in the guest bedroom though, as apparently you have to allow for those odd types that dislike their beds smelling of dog...

Occasionally on the sofas, if they are really dry (which is rare!). They have second beds in the living room (the floor is wood on concrete in a cold house). They are allowed on the beds on Sundays after we have had a lie in (hubby gets up and feeds/walks dogs at 8 then comes back to bed for a couple of hours). They obviously have a calendar because they know what day it is!

I couldn't bear them on the bed normally. I'm a light sleeper, and anyway they are big dogs. Honey is about six stones, and insists on lying right on top of me!

My first own home was a bedsit, and I had a little Heinz 58 dog that would start off in her basket every night, but would manage to sneek on the bed without waking me every single night, so I gave up. She was only small, and was very accomodating - she would hop over to the other side of my knees every time I turned over!

The dogs are allowed on both. The dogs will jump up on the bed in the mornings as soon as OH opens bedroom door, and will wait on the bed while i have a shower. They're not allowed to sleep the night with us though occasionally my number 1 dog does as shes suffering from only child syndrome since we got the boys in january!

My dogs have their beds in the kitchen and that's where they stay. They are occasionally allowed into the living room on their beds, never on the furniture. Saying that our young springer has decided that its ok to sneak into our son's bedroom (bungalow) overnight. Son encourages her so it has become a bit of a habit. The older dog makes no attempt to leave her bed. The cats who until this last winter have lived out all their lives, now 13 years old, have decided in their old age that its not a bad idea to come in the warm in the evening so I have bought two little beds for them that they are learning are their place when they are in the house. In fact one has just come in with me and after a little gentle persuasion has settled on his new bed. He will probably stay there all day until tea time knowing him. :D

Neither! We did allow them on the bed but have now banned them, which isn't proving to be much of a problem. They do have their own sofa but have never been up on 'ours' - the little dog knows he can sit on someone's knee if he wants but not actually on our sofas, if that makes sense!

When my parents had a dog when I was younger, he wasn't allowed on the couch or upstairs at all although my brother and I used to try and encourage him to come upstairs with us but he never would (think the dog knew the rules better than us! :p ).

On invitation ;) My dogs are not allowed free roam of the house, and are usually in the kitchen, as that's where I am most of the time.

Bed - yes, along with OH and the 2 moggies. Sofa - no, but only because we don't have space for one in our tiny flat, which doesn't really matter because between work and the horses (Ronniedog is with one of us all the time) we're hardly in the flat anyway, except to sleep!

I've spent a lifetime living with animal hair everywhere, and things ain't about to change!

No!

Two thumping great GSDs, probably wet, maybe muddy and certainly stinky, ugh... even if they were clean.

They don't even come indoors, they overheat within 5 minutes in the house.

They have their own bed...a single one, it used to have a mattress until they ate it, so now the frame is just filled with straw.

3 staffords, shorthaired and quite clean and yes they do go on both the sofa and bed. I put throws on which are washed easily and they are mega cuddly!!!
