Do you let your dogs lick your plate after you've eaten?

My dogs never beg for food and will remain in their bed at meal times and wouldn't dare to come near the table unless my MIL is having food with us and then they both sit by her feet but don't look for food. I confess I would put a plate down for them to finish off anything but dishes always go in the dishwasher and I would not do it if I didn't have a dishwasher. I usually try to put any left overs into their dishes and never feed them treats from hand at all. I know lots of people train with treats but having had a very pushy pony when it came to treats from the hand I decided a long while ago never to feed that way.

I've just been further mulling this over and realised I'm a slight (ok, very much a) hypocrite because I let my horses drink out of my bottles!

Oh yes. Dogs lick everything, before it goes into the dishwasher and while it's in the dishwasher if the door is left open. My little dog has also been known to share a fork with me, and both of them are face lickers. I also share Likits with the horses. And yet somehow I'm still alive and healthy! :D:rolleyes:

Absolutely not.
Any suitable left overs would be set aside to be fed in their bowls at feed time.
It's not just a hygiene issue for me either. It's about training and acceptable behaviour.
The dog eats when I say so, I make the rules he obeys them.
That makes for a happy contented dog, confident in his place in the family.
Watch a wild pack, no one eats until the leader says so, after having his fill, never any disobedient members of that pack.

Excellent post! Our dogs too eat when we say so, in other words, after we have eaten provided they are lying down quietly, no begging, and provided they sit and wait after the plates etc. have been put on the floor, they are allowed to lick them prior to them going in the dishwasher. This is why they wait until we have finished with every single dish - because as you rightly say, pack leader eats first!

And we as humans have more bacteria in our mouth than a dog !!!

Possibly true, but also possibly, less than around the dog's rectum, vagina or cheesy weeping penis, which could all so easily have been the last part of the dog which its tongue was in contact with, before it licked your mouth.

You can have a snog with a dog, if you like. Not for me, I'm afraid!

Alec.

I let my two lick the plates, in fact anything thats got left over food on, its no big deal, live's too short to get so hung up on these things. They sleep on the bed too "shock horror" when you spend a lot of time on your own simple things bring pleasure :)
