Im part loaning a horse at the moment who just stopped in the road to poop while holding up traffic behind us. I was not impressed and no matter how much I tried to kick him on etc.. he would not move till he has finished. The owner has said that he always stops and she has always let him.

Does anyone else let their horse stop?

Yes sometimes with Thumper, but he will carry on walking/trotting if I tell him to.

However, with Amy it was a different matter. We 'discussed' it several times, but she never seemed to see it my way..........

Nope, it's not a good habit for a horse to get into. What about him stopping in the middle of a round of jumps or a dressage test...not good. The owner should never have allowed this habit to form.

yes my boy does this,i just want to find a big hole to hide in !! i do make him walk on if i can but downhill is a bit different,he likes to find grass to do it on and will park himself in a hedge if he can lol hes well trained !!!!

Had my horse 12 years and he has NEVER been able to walk and poo at the same time (is it a male multi-tasking thing d'you think?!!)
Seriously though, he seems to make quite a meal of it, really lifts his back and gives a big grunt, so I figured maybe he just can't do both!

my daughter's 12.2 is the first pony I have ever owned who stops to poop. We are continually in discussions about it! I think it's shocking, as pps have said, what if he decides to poop mid show jump round or dressage test? (I suspect he wouldn't, though!) - but he is an elderly pony and does not seem open to negotiation .......

He offers to stop (he sort of voluntarily half-halts), but if I ask him to continue he does without argument, but sometimes indoors I do ask him to stop just so the poop doesn't get too spread out to pick up.

My old pony once stopped in the middle of one of the only jump-offs I ever got into, and then stopped for a wee half way round

SO embarrassing.

Oh, this is a subject that absolutely gets me!

NEVER NEVER NEVER have I ever let any of mine stop to poop. I am yet to find a plausible reason why this should ever be allowed. GRRRRR!

Would you poo on the move

I know horses are flight animals and can on the move, but if you watch them they do prefer to be stationary.

Saying that I do encourage Donkey to do it on the move, except at shows where I most certainly do not want her to dirty her hocks!!!!

Oh I think you just described Henry to a tee, there, he he! My boy also fails in the multi-tasking department, but because I don't compete in anything, it isn't a problem for me. Being a tiddler, we very rarely hold up any traffic and he does point his botty into a hedge or verge if he can, letting out the most satisfying, loudest grunt a little pony can muster. Still makes me laugh after 13 years of knowing him.

That's my mare too - believe me I have tried and we have "discussed" and "DISCUSSED" to the cows come home. End of the day, I make sure I warm her up long enough before a test that she goes in the warmup if she needs to and not in the test and so far, we have only ever had one involuntary stop in a test (and guess what the world didn't come to and end.......

Funnily enough though when a pro rider friend of mine 'discussed' it with her - Amy was in complete agreement

Yes I have the opinion that if I was mid poo would I like someone to boot me in the sides and thwack me with a stick, nah!
I've been fortunate enough that my neds never stop in tests mainly as they've been so stressed about travelling they have none left!!

No Way. I think its a terrible habit for them to get into. Imagine being part way through a comp and your horse stopping to poop. Once they learn its not acceptible behaviour they're fine about it

Well Mac always stopped to poop even in tests and far better (eg international) riders had apparently tried to persuade him the error of his ways without any sucess.

Yes my boy stops to poo and did when I got him. It is something I have not persuaded him to get out of. But I do not worry too much because we don't do any showing etc. To be fair, he does stop in the field too, so it must be natural for him so I let him get on with it.

Baron never stops, he doesnt even slow down. Really bad habbit for the horse to get into. He does stop if hes in hand though, but will walk on if I ask him to.

Yes, my boy stops to have a poo when we hack out, and he always tries to go up the verge too! Very tidy! Its never been an issue when we are doing more exciting things than hacking as when his blood is up he can poo and do just about anything at the same time! Its never bothered me that he stops out hacking, he prefers to, and I'm happy to listen.
