Do you let your horse stop to poop!!!!

I let April stop to poo if she wants to. She doesn't often do it when I am on her though.

She would never stop during a DR test or a SJ round as she goes into performance mode.

No I don't mainly because I have some friends who do let their horses stop to poop and they always stop when they are doing a dressage test, it's very embaressing and I swore I would make Axey continue while pooping.
He will canter and poop at the same time now!

Although we have to pick up the poo in the school and I sometimes make him stop so its easier to pick up lol!

When i learn to poo on the move I will have this discussion with my mare.

Are you a horse? If not, then why would you place human values on an equine?

LOL my mare would always stop and would not move! Made a big thing about it! Though never tried to do it during a round of jumping though-thankfully!!!

My 2 boys I have now jet propel it out as they do not want to stop as they may miss something!

i don't encourage it cause on ride outs up here, u can end up in bother if there is like 60 horses trottin up behind u and ur stuck in the middle gettin trampled lol!!

My TB would never dream of relieving herself in either way whilst being ridden - what a thought!
Other, lesser horses, I would not allow to stop when pooing, but they do have to stop to wee.

If we're just ambling along, then yes I let him stand to poo. If there's traffic though he can walk and poo at the same time.
He doesn't seem to even want to stop to poo at competitions.

I let my horse decide - they all know they can, but it comes in a value pack with a stripey bottom, and I will spin my whip!

No. Think it's a bad habit tbh as they can poo in canter and even jumping (you see it with Sjers on TV), and it is just down right dangerous if you happen to be on a busy stretch of road, or a blind corner, and your horse stops to poo. My girl has never asked to stop, and if she did I would boot her on, so I know if she stops then she is going to wee too. Also, if you were out with a group of 7 and every person let their horse stop to poo, then you would just be constantly stopping, plus obviously how embarrassing if you were in the show ring or doing a dressage test!!

I let mine stop it really doesnt bother me come to think of it my friends let theres stop too,we usually shout out poo time if one stops we all wait.

I would like to see anyone of you keep spooks walking when he decides that nature is calling!! I have not yet found any tactic that can convince him that walking and pooing is of benefit to him.....I have even tried getting my friend who was riding next to me to grab his reins and try leading/dragging him forward and she had to let go before she was pulled off the back of her horse!!

He goes into Showpony mode when he is out and seems to know to go when stood at the start line of XC's etc before he gets down to business!!

He also has a very strict routine - stop, part hind legs, lift and wag (oh yes, wag) tail, grunt a bit and then get on with it! On top of this he has the most amazing sense of timing so stop and 'perform' in the most embarrasing of places!!

He also fairly regularly climbs into hedges so he can have a wee!! Normally prickly hedges so you come out covered in thorns!! I think he does all this to laugh at me to himself!!

I let mine stop if they feel the need, sometimes they do, other times they wont. I think it stemmed from my very first pony who never ever pood or peed whilst I was riding him, after about 2 years he finally did a poo and I was so happy with him that I encouraged stopping so he could do one!

I dont mind TBH. As long as they dont choose to go in the middle of a dressage test then I dont see a problem.

Absolutely not. We drive, can you imagine the danger of a horse and carriage stopping in the middle of a road

My mare never goes to the toilet in public, she is much too shy/posh/ladylike. My little boy used to carry on going when I first got him but used to poo down his legs. I think he got fed up with me washing it off so he always stops now. He says that only stupid animals soil themselves.

He did however once stop in the middle of the showjumping ring and have a pee. The very nice judge even stopped the clock for him so we didn't get time faults! He also appeared on a programme on Animal Planet at a show peeing and farting on camera when a lady was being interviewed. I'm sure his main aim in life is to show me up, and I am quite capable of doing that on my own!

I hack with an experiened ex-eventer friend who happily lets her 14 yr old gelding stop to poo. She says he can't manage to do two things at once, never could, never will! He hunts, events etc and it's never been a problem - but I was always taught to kick and use the whip if a horse stopped. Now I am more open minded about it.

But when I have persisted (and I mean persisted!!!) with this issue, my mare then continues schooling like a constipated camel so its even worse!!!

She's a stubborn old baggage though - we now have the agreement that I let her stop, but she has to do the business immediately and pop straight back into whatever pace we came out of.

Its a compromise, but it suits us and if it makes me a lesser horsewoman for not making her comply, then so be it - as I said, its happened once in a dressage test where she stopped and the world didn't come to an end for either of us!
