Do you like your horse's name?

The three horses I have at the moment are
Periwinkle- a 14hh pure connie pony. I love his name but we do shorten it to Peri

Skew-whiff- my coloured mare. Love the name and it suits her down to the ground... she is a bit Skew-whiff!

Nicky- the big horse. Really don't think this name suits him and he doesn't know it... and he is 10! It's even stranger as his comp name is Davy's lad?!

My first horse was Bonnie - thought that was ok,
then I had 'Benji' - love that name and it suits him so well, then I had 'Connie the Connemara', thought it wasnt very original but nice name, and now I have Victor Meldrew. Honestly I do!!
We call him 'V', 'Big V', 'V Man', 'The Boss', anything except Victor, and he comes in from the field when I shout 'Baby' LOL! My OH calls him 'My Boy' hahah.
Victor's show name is my HHO name and I like that one!

i used to have a piebald called ' paddy sid vicious mars bar ryan'. it started off as just paddy but ended up being this- and everybody at the stables called him this! it just stuck.
i nearly purchased a horse (he failed vetting) he was an appy-loads of red spots-they called him red legs - i think i would have had to change that one! tho they do say it's unlucky to change a horses name...

Ooh this is a good post!
Hmm let me see:
Louis - it really suits him and I like it
Harry - same as above
Eric - v odd name for a horse but I've gorwn to love it and it really does suit his personality
Lindt - not massively keen on it but it has grown on me, I love his posh name: Keystone de Nada
Imeca - like it and it suits her
Freddie - like it and it suits him
Wally - don't like it (the name not the horse)!

My mare arrived from the dealers with no name. She was just off the boat from Ireland so I fancied an Irish name. I called her Ashlene ( the irish spelling is Aisling but I thought Ashlene would be easier). My mates at the yard didn't like the name originally but it stuck and she has been Ashlene for 6 years now. Originally I thought I'd shorten it to Ash, as she is grey, but instead it has become Lene! (pronounced Leeeene!).

I had a Sparkle (named by her breeder and owner for 3 years - we bought her aged 3). I hated the name Sparkle to be honest (apologies to anyone with a horse with that name, and I do know there is someone on this board. I'm not a fluffy person and I'm not 9 years old, so whenever someone non-horsey (or horsey actually) asked her name, they'd pull a face and think I couldn't see! Her posh name is Priddy Fair, but that's because her breeder did not know a lot about naming! She died in July and I could put up with the name if she was just back here

My old boy is called George and I love that name. I'm well into regal names for children or horses!

My new boy is Lanky. His posh name is Trenawin Laureat (was Lastatt but was changed by the person who bought him from the breeder). I hate the name Lanky and everyone laughs at it, but I guess it's fun.

I don't agree with changing animals' names, though, because despite what some thing, they do learn their name in some strange way. I also think it becomes part of their character.

No - Dolly, it is horrible. Her Reg name is Keltons Dolly - even worse.

Billy was OK, although I renamed him credit card bill as when I sold him he paid it off for me. The funniest thing about it though was that my name is Mandy and I found a cartoon TV show that is Called 'The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy' which is even more apt as one of my companies main suppliers in the US also changed it's logo to The Grim Reaper.

I had a chestnut roan dartmoor (but oddly arab like) mare called Nutty or show name Squirrel Nutkin. Nutty really suited her!

Now I'm loaning a laid back connie called Paddy - seems like such a laid back, chilled name so it clearly suits him and I like it!

i have adge the warmblood ( he is on loan0
SOX ANOTHER WARMBLOOD AS SHE HAS 4 MASSIVE WHITE SOX
MORGAN HE IS A BOY
TOM SOUNDS LIKE AN OLD MANS NAME (HE IS 18 THO)
DAISY SOUNDS LIKE A COW
HARVEY ALSO SOUNDS LIKE A COW NOT A WELSH PONY
AND LEWIS WHICH IS OK

Oofa is like a sweet way of saying...'Oh dear' or 'poor you' in Norwegian lol! It is a slang expression, not a swear word but a cute saying. I use it a lot!

Pickle came with his name, I have warmed to it over the years but I still think its more of a pony name than a 17.1hh clydie x name!!

His shows name was Eagles Pick Pocket, so far have stuck to it but thinking of changing it to Piccadilly Rock

Oh and we bought George after having had Sparkle for about 5 or 6 years, so they became affectionately known as George and Mildred. Now we have Lanky who has sweet itch, relieved my George's grooming, we are going to call them Itchy and Scratchy!!!!! So even though I don't agree with changing a horse's name, I do like nicknames!

Could have been worse DD, DollyBird

The first pony I loaned was called Nellie
smile.gif

The next Toby.
I loved Nellies name, not keen on Toby. I use to ride a skewbold shetland called Peanuts who was cool

Bertie was my first horse, I love his name, old fashioned.
Arnie came next, we named him because he came from the USA
Bally didnt have a name when I bought her. I liked the name bally and it just so happend that she was from a part in Ireland close to Ballybay, so the name stuck.
Winston, well hes just cool! and i love the old fashioned name so wasnt about to change it. It links well to his birth date (06/06/95 D Day)
Snoopy didnt have a name either, well he was called Noopy (some random letters taken from his stupid long registered name).
I called him Scooby first, after a dog I met the morning I went to pick Snoopy up - i was with MdeM at Aldon Horse Trials.
Dad wanted to call him Brian! but Snoopy stuck.

I have a beauty (golden beauty)- in fairness, i was 8 when i got her, think i was prob aiming for black beauty, but she's chestnut so had to go with golden. we only really call her boo tho.
savannah - show name golden savannah, was this when i got her, i don't name all my horses golden.... she is palomino, and was originally called sandy (original eh) but girl who had her before me changed it. i call her anything from van, vanny, vanna, or fanny-anna. she is also tweedle-dee, to murphy's tweedle-dum.
laugh.gif

murphy- called it when i got him, he's irish, so another original one. does suit him tho, as he's moody murphy!i thought of his show name murphy's law tho, which i really like. he also answers to fatty bum bum (gets called it alot).
laugh.gif

if we're talking about silly names - mum named our donkey CLINT.(before i was born) i mean really! why, mum, why!

I love the name Adina even prefer Adinda!

mine was called bridie (horrible name) so i changed it to princess bridie but then decided i liked princess bridikins more but thought i shouldnt change her passport again!!

soon it might be bridie burgers but we shall see!

Of my current 2 -
Quinn had no name & was called 'the chestnut horse'
crazy.gif
by his owners in ireland. I bought him from Michael Quinn, so called him Quinn which I think suits him. Quarrybank was the name of the school my Dad went to & as I wanted his show name to start Qu it's perfect.
Spider was called Spider by his breeder (which I like) sadly his passport / show name is 'Boy Talk' I hated it at first but I'm getting used to it now
smile.gif

The worst I had was Bikini
crazy.gif
shocked.gif
blush.gif
both her stable & show /passport name. She was Danish, so I tried to find out if it meant something different in Danish. It doesn't, it also means swimsuit
crazy.gif
You can imagine some of the comments I had from commentators when SJ or XC her
blush.gif

I've also had Patrick / Bally K that I liked
smile.gif

& Shadow aka ' Me & my Shadow' which I also loved & was so named by my Mum after seeing a photo of us.

Great post this

Ones On Our Yard , (Didnt Name Any Of Them)
Purita (Her Stable Name Used To Be Poppy But Mum Said It Sounded To Pony Like For A 16.2!) - 16.2 Dutch Warmblood.

GeeGee , Reg Name Is Gofer Black But I Hate That! 15.2 Tb ,
Boy , 14.2 Irish Sprts ,

Bruno , 13.3 Irish X

Ludo , 12.2 New Forest X

Scooby , Miniture Shetland

(:
Sapose Their Not To Bad? Lol.

Well I better like my horses name being that I named him! He's Jesper, yes that's JEsper not JAsper... wierd I know. He's named after a ex Chelsea footballer (Dad paid for the horse and that was the criteria!).
I also have Tally Ho who came with her name and god does it suit her. Now retired she is affectionately known as Piggles, no prizes for guessing why!
Also had Sammy who really suited his name although he was referred to as my 'sexy boy' more often that not!

Sariah's Shalom, stable name Sholly. I really liked both names, I found her reg. name very peaceful (which wasn't much like her at all!) and her stable name is quite playful and naughty, which was much more like her!

Horses i have had called
Ellie - not to bad, could live with the name just couldn't live with the horse
Sebastian - shortened it to seb, so that was ok.
Oliver - loved the name and the horse
Billy - i picked it as he didn't have a name
Pepper - ok i suppose
But now Lady - i mean how "original" thay could have used some imagination.
But i don't believe in changing names only shortening them.

Well I've named all mine so far bar one!

Wonka - I love this name, it just suits him, although variations of the name include Wonka Donka, Donks and Wonky Donkey. People laugh or normally do a double take to check what I have said when they ask, but if you get to know him it does just suit him to a T. It is also really good if he is being an idiot as change a few of the vowels around and he gets called something else...
laugh.gif

Bailey - always loved this name and as my boy is the same colour as the drink I couldn't not call him it! Normally gets called Bailey Boy.

Krypto - my best friend bred him and named him Krypto Knyte and I love it, such a big ol' solid name. He does get called tippy toes a lot of the time which is funny considerinh he is going to make about 17hh and will not have small elegant tippy toes.

I find out tonight if I get the little coloured gypsy cob colt that I made friends with when he was about 2 months and is now my best mate! I have a name ready for him but will only use it once properly once I know whether I'm getting him - fingers crossed!

Excellent! Thank you for that, in which case it suits him well!!

I was always told it was Italian slang?

Ken - he was called Rusty and he is registered as Kingston Star, but she told me Kensington star so i called him Ken as i didnt like Rusty - it suits him!!

My last lad was Jack - he would have had a racing name but no one knew it!

and before that the wonderful Pinny (Money Spinner)

I have ha

Teddy - Like it becuase he was cuddly and teddy bear like.

Pickles - He was Apache (he was coloured) but I renamed him and loved the name.

Jazz - Show name was Maesfen Bizarre, which suited him own to the ground because he exhibited bizarre behaviour at any given excuse.

Baby - My current pony whose passport name is Romy, because she was imported from Romania. Pretty much nobody likes the name Baby but she comes running when I call her, so it's staying.
