Do you like your horse's name?

I love Kalief's name. It really suits him esp as he is an Anglo Arab! I would like to think of a good show name for him. My mum told me that there is a book called Kalief of Baghdad, but I don't think that would be suitable in the current environment!

I think it a beautiful name and I have designed a stable plaque in Arabesque writing which I am pretty proud of - I just need to get it carved now!
 
Right, I have read the entire thread, and I reckon I win HANDS DOWN for the most stupid name for a horse...

COTTAGE - yep, you have read that correctly, COTTAGE!

I mean, WTF?! Why would anyone call a horse Cottage - was it to go with Bungalow and Tower Block

It has absolutely NO bearing on her reg'd name, which is Lanjagold, from her sire, dam, and dam's sire.

So I renamed her Porridge, as it kind of sounds like Cottage - my YO thinks this is also a stupid name and said I should call her Pie, as in Cottage Pie LOL!

Splodge - named him, his reg'd name was Vivarini D'ici

Stanley was already named, suited him.

Cercano - it means *close by* in Spanish, which is a strange choice (he was Spanish)

Chico - AKA It's Chico Time - remind me never to let a 4 year old name a horse

Lucera, Emily (WTF, she was 18hh and built like a brick sh!t house), Ceredig, Ginny, Chippy (Chinnook Chip), Pepita, Zante, Judy, Santa, Diabla (and she was), Herbie, and loads more...never had a normal name!
 
Oh I just remembered another classic - a man who runs quite a famous pony trekking business in Co Clare had a little hairy shettie called 'Shergar'. And he put my mum on a horse called 'Saucepan'!!!!
 
My Arab stally is called Tobago - generally pronounced "Shut UP Tobago!" or "STOP it Tobago" or "Get DOWN Tobago"....

(His show name is H Tobago, the 'H' is just the initial of the stud that bred him, Hertford Arabians.)

Zoeshiloh on here started referring to his foals as 'Tobagolings' and that seems to have stuck!

Tobago has a dummy-mare called Trinidad (Trinny for short).
 
We have had:

Caddy - My mum's pony, named after the Amoco Cadiz, and quite unusual so I like this one!
Aggie - hate this name for a horse, I know far too many of them!
Lable - loved it, never met another one
Sophie Jane - suited her down to the ground, she was a right prima donna!
Raffles - Mum named him, I never really liked it much
Pippa - suited her, the name never offended me
Joseph - my aunt's horse, also known as Bonzo. Much prefer the former, as it suited him so much, he was such a noble boy!
Rosie - nice girly name, and it suited her
Mickey - thought his name was a bit common, but he answered to it so I couldnt change it, and it did suit him. We registered him as 'Just Mickey'.
Chicka - this was Ellie's name when we got her! Hated it, and my instructor called her 'Tikka Masala,' so she became Miss Ellie pretty darn quick!

Well I'm sure by now most of you know about Axels name!
But for those that don't he was named by a groom at the stud where he was bred, his proper name is Shotgun Blues.
The stud manager kept saying to me he was named after a band but couldn't remember which one so I went home and googled it and Shotgun Blues is a Guns'n'Roses song! and the lead singer is called............Axl

My last horse was called Rocky when I bought him, he was irish so a friend said find a rocky place in Ireland and name him after that, so he was called Giants Causeway, he was also 17 hands so the giant bit was very apt!
 
Well we have had quite a few horses over the years -

My current bunch are Abi (she is really Talkland Abbeygale - but Abbeygale is far too formal sounding for us!!!), Ruby (Doesn't have a posh name bless her!!), Flo - she doesn't have a registered name as I nearly choked when I found out how much it was to register a name with Wetherbys, but her full name is Just go with the Flo - which suits her to a tea! I have just taken on an Arab called Rupert - his posh name is MaHrouff - which I have to check how to spell it everytime at the moment - but I think I like it - definitely like Rupert though - very cool name!!!

We've also had Minnie, Olly, Gifty, Polly, Annie, Oliver (got changed to Prune though as Oliver and olly turned out to be a cursed name for us!), Ellie, Jaffa, Flame, George, Pirate and Myrna.

I do think it bad luck to change a horses name - but the only one we changed was Oliver to Prune - and he seemed to do a lot better (competing and less lameness LOL!!) when he was called Prune!!

I don't think I have ever had a horse with a name I don't like - but some are easier to shout across the field than others I think!

Sparky - yuck, no hate it. Who calls 17hh of ISH that?!
Oscar - suits him down to the ground. Don't like his registered name though (Sorry Gill!)
 
My first pony I had on loan was Fleur - I was a bit indifferent to that as she was usually called Satan for "short"...
My first own pony was Lilly. I really don't like the spelling so I changed it to Lily (all her documents were with the three 'l's but luckily she had no passport when I bought her so that went down as Lily). It suited her though anyway!
My horse now is Maiden. Gawd knows why?! She isn't a maiden - maybe she was her dam's first baby I suppose... I don't think the name could suit any horse, but I couldn't think of anything to change it to so she's still Maiden. Her "posh" name is My Fair Maiden

and whenever I talk about her to someone else, I usually say "my horse" or "my mare" rather than use her actual name

Well my Toby really suits his name... he's just a Toby looking horse... he's cheeky and not at all manly... his 'posh' name is Green Links St Christoper... which is a little strange... i'm used to it now though so it seems to suit him! I don't like Toffee's name... i think its too common for a dark bay pony... but i wouldn't change it... it seems to suit him now. He's a kind of peace-maker pony and this suits his nature! Wouldn't hurt a fly!! He doesn't have a 'posh' name!
I named my miniature shetland so i think his name suits him. He is 27" tall and currently a light chesnut colour with a chesnut and black mane... His name is Pumpkin. His little stubby legs and round chesnut tummy make him suit his name! I think its perfect for him! His 'posh' name is Precious Stone, so his old owner had named his Jade. But since we got him as a yearling and at the time planned on keeping him as a stallion we didn't think a feminine name like Jade suited him. We tried to keep with the theme of precious stones but we couldn't find anything not girly!! So he's Pumpkin =]

Finnly .. commen but again its good for calling him finbad finspaz his showname is Finntastic! tbh i think who ever called him that should be hung as whenever he does something wrong it looks silly...

Brig/Pig (blackwatch Brigadier)Love it he is such a pig hehe so usually call him piggy or pig i think i could count on one hand the number of times i ave actually calle d him brig hehe
