Just curiosity, but do you look at your jump on approach or focus on something beyond, I'm having a mini crisis, that I keep anticipating a long stride on approach when I focus on the jump, but not when I focus on something behind it, its on the proper stride??

its probably because when u look at the jump, subconsciously you are looking for the stride so maybe u try and set the horse up, whereas if you are looking over it, you dont concentrate on messing with the stride? i look at the jump, until you get to it when obviously you dont want to be looking down

I always jump with my eyes shut!!!

I just steer and my boy does the rest. I am really rubbish at jumping.

I would say yes I do, however when closer to the jump I look beyond it. As I approach the jump I look at the top, centre of the pole, however a few strides before take off I focus into the distance... If that makes sense?! Just do what works best for you

Yes - I look at it, cr*p myself, swear, kick, flap, and if I'm lucky I get to the other side of it just about still attached to the pony. I do not recommend my method

Hmm... I dont know. I think I do, its not something Ive really thought about. I think I look at it to judge the stride then when Im a stride or 2 away I'd begin looking beyond and which way to turn after etc. I often strew up my striding though TBH, so I just let my lovely honest horses sort it out!

Thanks guys, I just have this awful panic of being left behind, and looking like a mad woman, and worse jarring the poor horse in the mouth, but I also dont want to get in front of the stride either as she can put in a nasty stop, maybe just stick to dressage eh??

Haha well I always used to get moaned at for looking at my jump so one day (back in the days I actually used to jump) i was competing at this yard where at the bottom of the collecting ring was the house, and you could see straight in to the upstairs window, so I chose that as my "Landmark" to get a straight line and aimed... as I approached the jump there was a big fat man getting changed in there so I completely lost concentration cos I started laguhing, my pony skidded to a stop and I shot over her head, so since then I chose to stare right at the jump!!! I was only about 13 then and I can still picture it... haha

I've been trying this out over the last few weeks as I was taught to look beyond the jump but have let myself slip into bad habits and look at it. I've been practicing looking beyond it or to the next one and have found I have a better jump roughly 90% of the time. Mind you, once I'm in the air I really look for the next jump, but didn't realise how much this had been drilled into me until I saw pics of me almost looking over my shoulder for the next, lol. It's because I always get lost jumping! Will try to post/find a link for you as it's quite funny

Try counting, I was doing the same thing, kept looking at the jump then looking down at it, count your strides as you go around, 1-2-3-4 then over and over again, and focus on the next jump, it is working for me!

I look at the jump as I go round the bend/turn and then raise my eyes to beyond it.

Was just about to write this myself then but got beaten to it

I only look at the jump until I've pointed D at it and then I fix on something in the distance. If I look at it she stops every time.

i do and get told off. i get told to look up, if i look down at it thats where im gona end

Many years ago I did a xc clinic with Andrew Hoy, before you get excited, I was only doing the baby jumps! One thing that stuck in my mind was, when he asked the group where you should look on approach to a jump we all chimed in with "look up, past the jump, at where you're going next" thinking we were saying the right thing and he laughed out loud and said "how are you going to jump the thing if you're not looking at it"!!! Makes sense, although Im still a shut your eyes and kick like hell kinda girl!!!
