Have looked through the internet and there is a flood of contradictory info, so thought I would ask for first hand experience.
New yard doesn't have a school, but has a riding field with jumps etc. With nights getting longer, I was contemplating speaking to YM about possibly putting up some floodlights, so we can ride in the dark. The yard is in the middle of nowhere. There are some houses along the road, but the only building close enough to see the prospective light is a farm. Do you think we would need PP? Obviously if you guys said no then I would still check with the council to check, but just want to get my facts straight before I aproach the YM about it.

I think you need planning permission if they are above a certain height....some have got round it by putting lights at rider level rather than on poles. Might be worth checking that out.

Even in the middle of nowhere you will need planning because it applies everywhere.

We used to get round it by using lights at rider level but the only thing to check is make sure that all who ride in their have thier height taken into account. our lights were put up by a kind hubby but when i rode on my 17 hand and i am 5ft 8 the lights down one side we in my eyes and really glaring.

Yes, you need planning. When we had our arena built, and the planners came and inspected it, they asked if we were going to have lights, as they would need a seperate planning application. Due to light pollution ?!?
We have 2 'secuirity' lights on the back of the stable block, that shine over the arena ; ) to the field, so we can see the field gates 'for security of course' : )
They face away from the neighbours so had no complaints
