Do you need rider insurance to view horses?

Potentially stupid question, but better safe than sorry - should I be taking out rider insurance to cover going to view ridden horses? Do I need to ask if the horses i'm viewing are covered for 3rd party liability?

It will be safest to assume, no matter what the vendor assures you, that you will not be covered for any accidents at viewing under the vendor's insurance.

You may airily be told that the vendor is insured, only to find out later that they are not.

That is unless you only try horses at reputable dealers, who should have the correct cover in place.

Thanks, Tiddlypom - this makes sense. What about in the event that the horse you were viewing damaged someone/someone's property whilst you were riding it, though, is that something you need to take out cover for, or would it be the owner's responsibility?

That's a good question :).

Do you already have 3rd party insurance, such as the one you get with BHS membership? Worth checking out the small print on that.

I *think* that you should be covered by your own 3rd party insurance as long as you were riding or handling the horse with the owner's permission, but that does need checking out.

You are being very sensible looking into this in advance.

Thank you! I'm probably overthinking it a lot, but it occurred to me that there is potentially a gray area in there, if something bad were to happen.

I'll look into the BHS insurance - I don't have any at the moment, but if it will cover this scenario, probably worth taking out.
