do you not have public liability?

Just had a message off someone wanting to come to one of our shows asking what public liability insurance is as we state on our schedules that all competitors must hold their own.

Just got me thinking, do people really not hold any these days?! I would have thought in the times of "where there's a blame there's a claim" it was a must have for everyone!

IMHO, anybody who owns a horse and does not have this should be hung, drawn and quartered:rolleyes:. Sheer madness not to.

Madness! Especially in this day and age with a raging suing culture.

I've always had rider insurance/public liability. Even when I had my little section A and used to occasionally have a ride on other people's horses. It's just too risky not to.

I've never been asked to prove I've got it, but as others have said, it's madness not to have it! Especially if you're going out too!

Whenever I've gone to shows that stated it, I didn't carry it around, just had to write my policy number and name of insurance company on the entry form :)

Here's a question, if the horse I ride has public liability do I have to have my own as well? I have not got round to getting rider insurance (it's not been that long since I've been riding again) so need to get that sorted soon!

Mandwhy- most public liability policies cover anyone riding the horse with the owners permission. Rider insurance usually covers your losses. So if you hacked my horse out & something happened, my insurance would still pay out 3rd party losses. But if you also hurt yourself, you wouldn't be covered unless either you or I had taken out separate rider insurance for you.
Fwiw I know someone with no 3rd party, mad imo.

I thought me having gold membership covered me as a rider on my horses? So if I had a sharer, does that cover her 3rd party riding my horses? I didn't think it did? Great if it does.
I know a lot off people who hasn't got any form off insurance

Bhs gold covers you in any horse so long as money doesn't change hands. It covers what they describe as a 'friend coming to ride your horse at the weekend' but again if money changes hands its iffy.

wot exactly does the BHS insurance cover, I heard if you make a claim, they look to your house insurance, does that also cover third party liability, think I also heard something like that about actual horse insurance as well, but could be losing my marbles!

The policy is known as a 'last resort' policy. This means that if you have public liability with your house insurance, then you must claim on that (or horse insurance policy if you have that in addition to BHS membership). If you don't have your own house, or buildings insurance only, then the BHS Gold membership would kick in.

Worth mentioning, did everyone know that your equine items ARE NOT AUTOMATICALLY COVERED by your house contents insurance policy (even if said items are kept in/on your property) unless you have SPECIFICALLY informed your insurers that you keep equestrian equipment and want cover for it? It was news to me  I've always brought my tack home to keep it safe as the yard tack room was never safe enough. Now I learn 40 years on that my tack was never covered at home.

Apparently horse stuff falls under the category of specialist equipment, rather like scuba gear and stuff, and isn't automatically covered by the average household contents insurance policy. Worth checking on, guys.
