Do you own a re-trained racehorse that has gone on to be successful in another discipline? We want your stories and photos for a new feature on the website. Please send your submissions to hheditor@ipcmedia.com
I have a 20 yr old TB who I bought at the age of 15 as she is a dressage schoolmistress (she has 66 BD points). She is quite quirky and has a penchant for illness (colic, navicular, choke, dropping condition etc) and stereotypes (windsucking,crib-biting) but she is a bombproof ride with lovely paces even so!
Will get something together to send in if that is the sort of thing you are interested in?
I own a fab ex pointer, wins dressage, jumps for fun, currently just started doing affiliated eventing on him, he is a true horse in a million, 100% in every way, couldnt put a price on him!
I have a wonderful ex-racehorse mare (her grandad is Nureyev) who is now a lady of leisure who had lots of issues when I bought her but was worth every second of pain(!) and frustration - we only did local dressage/jumping tho as I am not very into competing on much of a scale. Maybe we never made the big time but all the same she is beautiful and clever and as I have found out over the years far more intelligent then me!!!!
I have a fab exracehorse/pointer who i have owned for just over a year. He has the most wonderful temperament and is very sane and he was brilliant to hunt last season, hes very controllable and laid back. He has fantastic breeding on both sides (his grandsire is Sadlers Wells) but he didnt have the will to win that a racehorse requires.
At the moment I am only hacking him out and schooling him but hope to compete him soon. He has the ability and intelligence to go into any sphere (and hes also very handsome - which helps!). I think hes great and love him to bits!
I bought my first one as a project while my other mare was in foal - incredibly easy going/can do type of horse - I did virtually nothing with her and she still qualified PAVO as a 4 year old.
Yes, we have two ex-point-to-pointers - one successful and the other useless - but they are both SUPER! "Successful" one has done lots of hunting, cross country, flat work lessons, some show jumping, and is now in foal (2008) but hopefully will be out cubbing (oopps!!! Autumn hunting!) and even more hopefully able to attend at least the opening meet before sending her off on maternity leave! My daughter describes her as "Psycho Mare" but adds that she considers her to be the safest horse to ride (being totally predictable and NEVER intentionally naughty). The "crap" one is too lovely for words! Even at my advaced years ...52 (started riding in 1963).... I charge around the countryside on him - he's WONDERFUL! 17hh of big, soppy laid back horse! No, every ex-racehorse deserves a second chance and it's up to us to give them that opportunity! Our two are worth their weight in gold!
yup - we have 2 exracers, a 5yo gelding and 4 yo mare.
Best thing I ever did. I could not ask for two more pleasant horses. My 5yo can have his moments, he is barley and sugar intollerant, but now we have this under control he's a gem.
My mare is only 4 but does everything she is asked with no questions and is 100% in everyway.
Both are regularily ridden by novice riders and kids and i would never worry about the riders safety when on them. They are safe and steady when they need to be, yet when I take them over the common for a blast they love acting like racehorses again!
Best of all my non horsey Oh is now a horsey OH as him and Darcy have bonded so well, he has learned all the on the ground stuff and is now trotting and cantering, having learned all of it on an ex-racer. He regularily takes them out into the fields to ride and has never had any probs just having a steady trot.
I could not ask for 2 better horses and wouldnt hesitate to take another one on.
I own the lovely Petrisk.
she was useless at her racing, so is now an eventer.
i hope to do an intermediate novice at the end of the season - if i get the runs in before hand.
she is tho most lovely horse but gets a bit OTT wit her jumping.
but she has proved the myth that horses bred for flat racing can jump.
iown an xracehorse he is the most kindist horse and the most
safest horse iv ever come acrossed enyone can ride him from most bigginers to the most advanced i brought him in feb in the most poor conditon complete shin and bones and rain schald and mud fever the horses name is life mach he had won£8000 on the flat and over hurdles the last race he ran in was the st legger in 2005 as a pacemaker and has nothen dancer lines iv just intodused him to showjumps he has taking a liking to them so hoping to showjump him
My ex-hurdler is now 24 yo. Very arthritic too. Over the last 14yrs we've been together we've done PC ODEs and PC dressage. Before I met her she'd done lots of showjumping. She was a complete lunatic when I got her and terrified me regularly, but that taught me loads and I thank her for it. Ex-racers do need all our support cos they are worth it. We are no longer a riding pair but we still have laughs together thanks to her sense of humour.
Not major competitions......any help?
Yep, I have two. One's Irish and the other from Kentucky! He's only raced in America and was brought over as a potential polo pony but ended up far too big and a little too sensitive. Would not change them for the world even though neither one is perfect.
I have just affiliated them both with BD, so we shall see how that goes, and both are good SJ and XC doing a few intros last year.
Mine are also of the shoe throwing nature, but temperament wise are chalk and cheese, one being very bold but a little bit naughty and the other spooky as hell but only wants too please. Both are bay with only a stripe and star for markings.
We have owned an ex flat racehorse for the past 18 months, originally with the intention of having a nice riding club all rounder.
However he has really taken to SJ and in his first year progressed through the ranks starting with Novice , discovery 1.05,s and now jumping Foxes in fact he won yes won 3 foxes at wales and west a cpl of shows ago.. also won a newcomers and 6yr old the following show. Welsh masters and Scope Sports Horse Classic Blue Riband here we come !!!
