Do you poo pick your fields?

Do you poo pick?

No poo picking where I am a livery. Large fields rotated approx every 6-8 weeks. Fields are harrowed. We worm count and results last time where all low count or no eggs seen.

Well I do, but unfortunately the owners of the other horses in the field don't do it very much so the field is not exactly clean. I just can't understand why they can't grasp that it reduces the worm burden, keeps the flies down, you can check the fences and look for holes, glass or plastic lying around while you are at it, it increases the available grazing and last but not least, a clean field shows people care :(

Twice a day in the paddocks around the stables. Once a day in the others.
I think it keeps it tidier looking, and also you can catch any docks/weeds from getting established by snipping/pulling up as you go along.
Worm counts since doing this has been low to nil.

Yes i do poo pick as mine are in relatively small paddocks within the field, and I also rotate them around the paddocks so some of the field is always resting. I wouldn't do it if they were in a massive field.

Yes we clear the fields daily always have

we get comments like

don't your horses go out??

where is the poo?
wow don't the fields look nice and clear

takes a little effort or allot depending on scale of fields and poo

by no worms and good grazing if you have only a small field think with loads of weeds and soiled areas you have less and less actual good grass. but you reap the reward

if you spend a short time clearing them

imagine if you have 2 acres when you add up the weeds and poo you prob actually got 1 1/2 acres or maybe less of grazing area that's how i look at it

Yes, generally daily from spring till Autumn and about 3 times a week in winter. My horses are strip grazed so I see it as essential.

Nope. Not very often. I am only just clearing my field from when my horses went out months ago. They only ever graze the bit of new grass I move them every day anyway. I should be better about it but they don't seem overly bothered, especially as they have poo piles which they tend to use so it isn't scattered over the whole field.

They are regularly worm counted and have a zero count every time. Seems fairly logical to me? They don't have worms to begin with (new horses are wormed on arriving and kept in), so their poo also doesn't have worms, ergo they don't get worms. I only have my two in my field to worry about which helps.

I will admit that it looks much tidier when it is done though which is why me and OH spent three hours today scything down thistles and picking up poo. Much better :)

Yes in summer and no in winter.. winter grazing is LARGE and we only have 3 on it.. in summer it is grazed by cows so cleans the winter grazing of worms..

Think if you are in a rotation situation then poo picking is less important

Yes paddocks are cleared about 4-5 times a week.
Talking about the sweepers causing grass sickness, my old yard had one and within 3 years 4 horses died of grass sickness. Before this when fields were done by hand there were no cases so the corellation seems to be quite strong there.
I now have my own yard and love being able to keep control of exactly how things get done. Don't think I could ever go back to a big yard again.

Yes but only this summer have started and we have really noticed the benefits. We don't have especially good grazing and are rotating two paddocks. The grass has been much better keeping it clear by poo picking and I actually enjoy it! Its better all round for the horses and my friend who owns the yard who doesn't have to look out of her window at a field of c**p! We don't poo pick in the middle of winter though.

We poo pick for 21 horses rotated between 3 fields at the weekend which doesn't take too long to clear, keeps their poo bits clear so they carry on in the same places and don't sour the other grazed bits of field. The muck heap is spread once a year over the fields too and we have no worm Probs, plenty of lush grass and the fields support 21 horses easily.

YES YES YES, But I have just taken on a yard where they dont, I have started a new thread if anyone can help me???? I am trying to get together a flyer with 10 good reasons/facts about poo picking to try & get my liveries to poo pick. Any help would be GREAT.

No.

No prob with worms, worm counts done regularly and all new horses kept seperate until FEC done and clear.

Summer field is 15 acres and winter is ?????? acres of hill or a rotation of 4 paddocks of approx 5 acres each depending on how wet it is. Fields are v wet so if they get boggy horses are turned out on hill instead.

Fields are rested and also grazed with sheep.

We only have 4 ponies and 2 horses, if they are kept on a smaller area (sometimes in the summer) we do poo pick, if we can be bothered and only because it looks nicer.
