If you had a choice, would you go it alone with say one private livery on your own land or do you prefer a busy livery yard!! I have land but my mate has moved to another yard as she can't ride/muck out her horse as much as she would like to, so gone on a 7 day livery yard that is also nearer to her home, and i work and could not help her out all the time as i have my own horse's and kids and job "oh and a life" to think off, so it's just me and 2 horse's and i no I'm going to get fed up with my own company, I don't no whether to find a livery yard to move to or just stay put and find some one to share my land with...

Depends completly on the yard!
Been on some that were horrable and some that I almost cried to leave.
A good livery yard is always lovely, so would go for that every time.

I think your ownn yar but be great, but could get a bit lonely. Also if you have kids/job is good to be somewhere where some one can help you out if you get stuck, and also company to ride with

For me my own yard with maybe a livery or two for company and extra cash would be the best of both worlds. Can you not find another 'lodger'?!

I've always had my own place so I know I couldn't cope with someone elses rules. Besides I heard a story last night where a young girl at a livery yard has been thinking of moving on. YO found out and started screaming and shouting at them of "F" off out of her yard as soon as possible. The next days she was following them around the yard harassing them. (Thats not the first bad report I've heard of this particular yard). It just makes me glad I'm on my own. All I have is a field and a stream but some very good friends in the field next door and we help each other out. I'm not sure I could share with someone else either - I think you have to be pretty laid back to share. I'm just soooooo set in my ways!!!!

I'd sooner have my own place - it'd be heaven and I'd be quite happy with just my own company. Unfortunately I don't think it'll ever happen unless I win the lottery - they yard I livery at is nice though - just not my own.

I love having my own yard, although i have two stables and two acres, it's nice to have it at home as i can come and go as i please even when the kids are about i don't have to bundle them in the car and take them to the yard, i can school/lunge here. Although i have been toying with the idea of getting a livery, not sure if it's worth it!

I've been on my own the last two years (after being on a yard for the previous 11!) and am starting to find it increasingly lonely! I really miss the horsey company, which was the main reason I joined H & H! My sister's horse is there but I have the chore of feeding him everyday. I think I would like to go back to a yard one day. It's nice to be able to do your own thing, but like I said, I miss the company of other horsey people!

Thanks girls. It is good to have your own place and my Manege will be finished soon, but I get fed up with hacking alone, I no I'm lucky to have it as only live 4 doors away from the field and i have 3 new stables hay barn ect ect but....
May be I'll look for some one to come and share with me before i do anything in haste!! but i do not want to get caught out doing other peoples horses again, i don't mind every now and then but i ended up doing it most of the time..friend or no friend, but i done it for the horse.

In an ideal world (and with a lottery win) I would have my own yard every time. As much as I love the yard where I am now, no troublesome people, great facilities, it isn't mine and I have no control of the overall running of it.

It is fair to say though that I can be a bit anal about tack cleaning, pasture management and tidyness..at my own place I could enforce the rules...at a yard I do my own stuff (and some more) but have learned to let others just get on with it - they have routines that clearly suit them.

I'd recommend that you set the ground rules and know exactly what you want/don't want in a livery/lodger. Have a good think about it. Even write your rules down then advertise. That way, I think you'll know for sure what you want.

As for the hacking alone: Are there any horses in your area? I got fed up with hacking alone and so every time I saw someone go up the road on a horse I'd start talking to them. Now I hardly ever ride alone!

I dont think I would like my own yard unless it was a larger yard with quite a few liveries. I would get really bored, I like knowing there is someone to help me out if I get stuck, and people around all day incase anything happens to my horse. Also like to ride with other people, and have people there to seek advice from.

I also like the social part of having a horse, I spend most of my weekend down the yard just chatting to people.

Private livery on own land! ! Much better... although less people to help you out! But also less people to interfere!

Own yard every time! There is a livery yard next door and I am so pleased I don't have to deal with all the petty squabbles that arise on yards. So much better to be able to do your own thing when you want and how you want. I ran a livery yard for a lot of years and would never do it again!

My own yard every time!

In my case, I spent years trailing my daughter back and forth to a yard from the time she was tiny, in all weathers. It was HELL, I almost gave up on the horses altogether at the time. I would have loved to have been able to have the horses in the back garden as I do now.

Yes it is great to have company, people to bounce problems and ideas off but with that comes squabbles, petty and not so petty, and all kinds of other things that made life with horses a little less enjoyable. I wouldn't go back to a yard ever again.

I have a couple of boarders here, but I never see the owners, their horses are merely pets that they come and pat, sometimes. One owner I haven't seen for 3 months. I look after the horses as if they were my own and the owners know that so don't bother themselves with anything on the maintenance side, total novices anyway, when they do show up it is always with a trail of family or friends to show 'their' horse off to. Bit sad really, what's the point of having a horse at all?

Oh I love the yard I am at currently.

But I am a bit anti-social at heart,

and dream of seeing my horse outside the kitchen window. One day I would just love to have my own yard.

Def own yard, no bitchiness, squables or ' borrowing' things etc,. Can always invite someone to share if you get lonely or want someone to hack with or help each other with care duties.

I often think I'd like my own yard, but I think I'd get lonely. And I'd end up with more horses so Chex wouldn't be by himself lol. I think it would be a big shock going from having my own land to being on a livery though!
