Personally i enjoy hacking out alone just me and the Cob :-)This is most likely because i am a miserable anti sociable git who would much rather potter about at our own pace in peace and quiet :o

I know in many cases it depends on the horse and rider doesn't really have to much choice, But i was wondering what do you prefer to do ?

I know in company Tess gets silly sometimes and makes big deals out of things she knows is fine because others do

Depends on who it is! I love a nice quiet hack alone, just letting my mind go where it will. I also enjoy good company for a ride, some chit chat, no problem with silence either. What I can't abide is the person who babbles on mindlessly for the whole ride.

At the minute, with company. I only just took my mare out for a five minute hack by herself for the first time today! I enjoy going with my friend, having a chat and enjoy riding but I haven't experienced a nice long hack alone yet so I might like that too??

Riding used to be valued time with my horse. Of human company there is no shortage in the south of England, so no thanks, no humans. ( how anti social can I get, humm?) :D

You sound like a double of me :D my sister bikes we me sometimes and all she does is talk utter rubbish all the way round, normally to herself :o I have taken to getting up early and going for a nice quiet one by myself.

I'd rather spend it with animals than humans

I much prefer to ride by myself, but then I'm not actually alone, I'm with my horse! I can do as I please, at what pace I want, sing all I want, stop and look at the views and I don't have the hassle of waiting for people when they aren't ready!! Saying that, I would love my sister to get another horse as we had so much fun when we were younger, but then we laugh at the same silly jokes and we know what the other is thinking, so there is never any arguing about where we are off to or how fast. Plus most of the people who are available to hack with only want to go about 3 miles!! I want to go out for 10!!!

Depends on the company!
I refuse to hack with riders with no road-sense or manners, of which there seems to be a constantly increasing number round here.

Oh definatly this ^^

A woman asked me to hack out with herand she has a mad irish sports horse than jogs with its head on the side avoiding the bit, she regulary canters on the tarmac... That was a quick "sorry i'd love to but my horse kicks ;) "

When I had my last horse I had a brilliant hacking partner. We became great friends and our horses were well matched.

Now I have only got folk riding out on my 13.1 with me on a 14.1. The 13.1 is a little bit cheeky and they don't seem to be able to get her to keep pace with me, even though when I hack the wee one out she is very forward going. It kind of kills conversation :(

However I have been out twice with a 15.1 owned by a friend and we are better matched ability wise and my mare has a very long stride so it has been really good fun. However she already has a hacking partner who is just off with a sore back so not sure how long it will carry on for but I prefer hacking with someone like that than alone, but probably alone over having to nanny folk on my pony frankly.

I have found a lot of people want to bomb around the place to, me and cob are not built to do that, we wander about sight seeing

I'm not bothered either way as long as the company is sensible, but my horse definitely prefers company.
He gets a bit bored going alone as we have been riding the same routes for 7 odd years now, but perks up no end if we go with someone else, especially someone new.

on my own
but i dont have access to an arena so our schooling is done 100% on hacks (i hire a 20x40 before a dr comp if ive not been to one in a while to remind us of the size of one!)
its also 'me time' and i like the peace and quiet of being out with just me on my horse with my dogs
i do enjoy the odd hack with others though- but have to trailer out to do that

I always hack in company on the racehorses, most of the time i chat and have a laugh with all the other stable staff however i have zoned out and daydreamed quite a few times

If it was my own horse then a bit of both really!! Nice to chat with someone however also nice to have a daydream and rant to your horse

I like both. Its nice to have company to chat too but also nice on your own because my horse is brilliant with traffic so I don't have to worry about other horses playing up if we meet large vehicles on the road.

Having spent the last few months hacking out alone, I boxed over to my friends today and 4 of us went out. I really enjoyed it, was lovely having some company.

Currently I prefer to go out alone, not because I am a miserable moo but because my Arabian walks twice as fast as a QH. I found the same when I had the PF. It is a pain in the neck to either be 30' ahead of everyone else, or constantly having to half halt and reduce a decent walk to a crawl - something Lola really objects to and it reduces her to a jogging, fretting idiot. She, like me, prefers to stride out and get somewhere.

I enjoy riding in company too, but don't often because there aren't a lot of horses that keep up with Lola, usually I go out with my neighours who have TWHs and they bimble along at a good clip.

I like both!

For fast hacks or shorter hacks (2- 3 miles), I'll go myself.

For longer hacks, I prefer company.

My boy is slower in company, preferring to go to sleep and just follow the bum in front so he's actually easier to hack alone - we're always dragging behind on group hacks.
