We also use a light covering of shavings , because Skodas favourate place to have a wee is the back of our lorry, and it the shavings make it less slippy, and a lot easier to clean up.

Or does it make it slippery when put on top of rubber?

Yes - always put straw or shavings down.
Many horses will not have a pee on rubber nor can they stand up on it whilst travelling.
Don't be a cheapskate - put down a decent floor for them.
A happy horse is worth far more than skimping on bedding in a box.
Just ensure that you "muck out" asap afterwards as rotten floorboards are lethal.
Im sorry but I think wet straw (e.g after they have had a wee) is a lot more slippery then decent rubber matting. Rubber matting these days is designed to be non-slip even when wet.
No. I have rubber floor over metal planks. I always remove the muck at the end of the journey, and when I get home, hose down the matting. I also take the matting out when I can to make sure there's no moisture trapped under it.
I never travel far enough for my girl to need a wee in the trailer.
I dont put anything in either - I have very good ridged rubber matting and he is fine on it. I will skip it out before going back home and always always muck out and wash down after every use. I will pull the mats up every 6 months or so but only then as I need someone to help pull them up - they are very heavy!
I don't put anything in either. I have rubber matting and she seems happy enough on that. She pee's as soon as she gets on the trailer....closely followed by a poo so no probs there
I dont put anything down if only traveling locally, but when we go to the UK I put a good couple of inches of shavings down cause they can be in the box for between 3 and 5 hours.
No 1 LGW always wees in the trailer - as soon as she gets in and the ramp is shut, it's a bit like going to the loo before you go out I'd imagine. We put a sprinkling of shavings down, this stops it running up the channels of the rubber matting as once loaded we go downhill, and makes it easier to sweep and wash out, which is done after every use.
