Do you realise how invisible you are

Its not just in the dark either, bright sunny days can be as bad because the shadows under the trees/hedges are so black.
Wear hi viz!!

To all those who think hi-vis is 'uncool' - well last time I checked intensive care and the funeral home were not 'cool' places to hang out either.

Good point dwi about being seen off-road as well. Also helps if you are in an area with MoD or other low flying - helicopters will try to avoid you if they spot you in time.

I wish more cyclists would embrace hi-vis as well. I've had a few close encounters whilst driving. If you are a vulnerable road user then its up to you to protect yourself as much as possible, don't just whinge that the drivers are at fault.

Spot on Pedantic!
We ALWAYS wear Hi Vis. Hatband, leg wraps, tailguards and tabards. Just need a hothatz or two

Its the one thing that drives me crazy in the village, we seem to be only one wearing Hi Vis ( and there is a large livery yard here )! Keep wanting to stop the car and ask them why??????? They even go out at dusk without it

[ QUOTE ]
I never wear any viz clothing and don't really think about what colour my clothes are.
Where my horses used to be kept, the yard owners used to make fun of people that wore the high viz stuff, and so none of us ever wore any. Even though, we'll probably be the ones that end up squished on the tarmac.

Rather unfortunately though, you are more likely to get away with relatively minor injuries, and it would be your horse "squished on the tarmac"

How can you be so arrogant?

What is so clever about putting your horse in that sort of danger?

Endanger yourself if you want, but remember that when riding on the road you are responsible for your horse as well, and I'm damn sure he would rather be bright yellow and alive with you and your dumb mates laughing at him than lying in the road with a couple of broken legs waiting for the vet to come and shoot him.

People like you make me so mad.

Twice I have passed Horseriders on a triple bend, 60mph road, dark Horses and NO high vis at all. Bloomin mental if you ask me, I never saw either of them until I was very near them because they blended into the background. I wouldn't ever ride on that road let alone with no high vis on.

I only cross roads out hacking but I still wear high vis as does my Horse. He's black and if I ever fell off and he ran onto a road I'd like to think he would be spotted. It's also good to let the dog walkers see you coming. I have an equifleece top and it is brilliant.

It's not just Horseriders though it's cyclists as well. We passed someone today on a 60mph road, dressed in navy and black, no lights, no high vis and it was raining heavily. All the cars had lights on. I often pass cyclists on my way to work and rarely see any high vis, and many don't even wear a helmet. Personally, I think high vis (and hats for that matter) should be a legal requirement on roads for both riders and cyclists.

As for anyone who makes fun of people wearing it....well, says a lot for their intelligence. It's not just for the sake of you and your Horse but also other road users.

I ride and lead a lot. I wear tabard and hat band. Ridden horse wears leg bands as does lead horse who is on inside of ridden horse.

No one is going to hit us and say" I didn't see you".

What most people tend to wear is a hi viz coat or tabbard. Fine if your are on a 13.2 pony, but of little use(better than nothing though) on a 17.2hh. Us riders need to be aware of the drivers area of vision- where do you look when you are driving - normally at the horses butt - thats why i go for the martingale and tail guard. I rode out today - full on hi viz - guess what I was taken the mickey out of. Can they not see that the "all we could see was you in the lane -you were so bright" I needed sun glasses to get past you comments" made me realise that a) hi viz works. b) I care about my horse c)I care about me.
