Thinking about it last night and I can remember it as clear as day. I was only 4 and my Auntie and Uncle were living at the navel base near Portsmouth and there was a big stables there and they let me ride one of the ponies down the road. He was grey and called Tommy and I remember my hat falling over my eyes when I trotted.

Didn't ride again until I was about 6 in wales up the mountain about once a month or so, then I was finally allowed regular lessons when I was 7 and the rest is history...!!!

Yes, it was also a grey and I didn't want to ride! My sister (who is five years older than me) bullied me into it on holiday as parents said she could only have a lesson if we both went, as they didn't want to waste a morning of the holiday on something just one of us wanted to do. I was a very small 7 year old and was terrified. We then had lessons every week at the riding school she was going to every two weeks when we got home

The rest is indeed history

I cant remember it as clear as day and no one in my family can remember but I must have been about 3 and we went somewhere visiting and I remember someone put me on a grey pony. I think I was with my Aunty and Cousin as noone in my family believes me and my sister and I were sent away to my Aunts each time my mum had my younger siblings. My Sister has no recollection but then she wouldnt have wanted to go near a pony!

Of course!! He was a little 11hh grey pony called Paddy at Markfield EC and I was 4

I had a load of lead rein lessons on him but he was a little sod and I fell off quite a bit - always wanted to go back next week though

I can't remember the first horse I ever rode, but I'm wondering if it, too was a grey? Looking at the messages above, it seems to be the done thing to have your first ever ride on a grey. My young niece and nephew certainly both had their first ever rides on greys (both as babes in arms - being held on by Dad) - I know for certain because the greys were mine!

Yes i remember, on my friends pony Rosie, who years later became my first pony. I was 4, headcollar on , leadrope wrapped around her nose! me on top walking and trotting around the field! Looking back at the pictures and knowing my Rosie we must have been nuts!!! But i still remember it clearly 20 + years later!!!!!!!!!

Nope - I was sat on a pony at 9 days old.

At 18 months won my first lead rein gymkhana class - I have the pic of me eating it still.

Earliest strong memories are when I was 4, galloping after mum's arab on my fat dartmoor through epping forest jumping the ditches.

Yes, I was 5 and it was on a pony called Copper who I think now might have been an exmoor, he had a mealy muzzle!

It was at Bowlers Riding school in Formby Lancashire (which is still going!!! :-))

I was hooked from then on, I have a photo of me grinning from ear to ear being led round

No because I was only a couple of months old. But I do know the pony was an evil little shetland called Paul. (Who I adored with a passion!) He put up with me while he/I was being held, but later when I was a bit older and wanted to actually ride him he used to buck me off with monotonous regularity. I think he is entirely responsible for my stickabililty!

I have quite a good story about my first experience on a horse. I don't really remember it but my mother remembers it as clear as day. That is because at the age of 3 and a half the first horse I ever rode was Desert Orchid.
Now we used to live in Ireland, and we just happened to live down the road from the yard that Desert Orchid was being kept at the time. Every morning the lads would hack past on the horses to the gallops and hack back past us. I would stand at the gate every morning with my carrots and the jockeys would stop and let me stroke the horses and feed them carrots. One day, a jockey got off and offered me a little walk on one of the horses. It just happened to be Desert Orchid. I can barely remember it but my mum loves recounting the story to every horsey person she meets

Dessie was also grey. So my theory hasn't been disproved yet (cos no-one else above has yet mentioned any other colour!). Come on - who is going to prove my theory wrong?

NO i was months old.I had a basket saddle and the pony i rode was ancient!with one eye!bless her.My mother then bought me star an 11.2 welsh x strawberry roan.I had my first jumping lesson at four of the lead-rein, i fell of, got up put my hands on my hips and demanded someone catch my pony!

It was somewhere in Scotland, I'd a friend at school who went riding somewhere, and I went with her, it was a pony [maybe 13.2hh] called Kipper, and sorry Faro, I'm disproving your theory!! He was liver chestnut, and looked just like his Thelwell namesake!

we went for a donkey ride on the beach and they happened to have a little black pony (sorry not grey!) which of course i wanted to ride rather than a donkey. walking up the beach was great but when they all 'ran' back i was bumping so high out of the saddle it made me cry!! didn't put me off going back on a pony again tho and here i am 40 years later still riding!!

My first ever ride on a pony was when I was about 12.. it was at a place called Silvermere in Surrey. I rode a grey pony called Tom Thumb...he was a devil and was always carting off across the golf course with his little riders...

I was nearly 4 and I was 'trying out' my pony!

More like I was led around for two minutes whilst crying with my mum holding on to me! I remember blinking through the tears! It's my earliest memory

We were out for the day at a fete or something and they were doing pony rides, I sat on a little grey pony called Peppermint who was owned and being led by an elderly lady. All the way home I was thinking that when she died she might leave me him in her will! I must have been about 10 at the time.
Then I begged for riding lessons and finally started when I was 12 at Matthews Riding School in Gillingham and rode a little pony called Pepper in my first lesson.
The funny thing is I worked at Matthews as an instructor and Pepper was still there
smile.gif
as were most of the others I learnt to ride on too

I rmeber going for walkies at Hayfield (Changed so so much now, the reception wasn't even built then) I would have been 4 or 5.
I rode a little Bay pony called Sunny, he was so sweet. After that I rode an absolute git called Bazil...Who I had the joys of putting in his place when I started lessons a few years later!

No I was too young

I do have a really cute picutre of it though, he was called Jet and had a sorrell coat, I was about 3 and was wearing no hat, bareback with a headcollar and leadrope
blush.gif
but I was sitting behind my sister who was 8 and clearly had total control of the 14.2 pony

When I was at nursery school there was a summer fair with a lttle pony with a cart that you could have little rides on. Being a precocious 4 year old I refused to go in the cart and insisted on riding the pony instead, so when the pony was having a rest the man took all his driving tack off and let me sit on him and he led me around the field! My mums got a photo of me beaming on this little bay roan pony, in fancy dress ( I was dressed up as a tropical bird)!!

My first post but couldn't resist.

I can remember it like it was yesterday, probably because relative to everyone else here it was! I started in February this year sitting on a lovely old boy called Orbit at the local school my daughter was riding at. It was a dare from my youngest daughter now 9, she though it was good sport for her 40+ dad to look terrified. I loved it!

Sorry to say now totally obsessed, even to the extent of joining a forum for the first time and browsing online tack shops for tack for my future new family member.

Now got the other daughter (loves singing and dancing and was not interested at all) riding.

Anyway back to browsing for tack.

Only thing I would say, its a good job I live in a house full of women, there doesn't seem to be that many blokes around.

Yes, I was very young, got change from £5 and rode a grey mare called Gemma who took off with the girl ion the lesson before me
grin.gif

I was that small I had to be lifted on to her and she ran away as i was being lifted on... I loved her though and kept kicking till we trotted...then I got told off
blush.gif
but it gave me the bug and Ive never looked back!!
grin.gif

think the first one I was on was a grey 12/13 hh welsh pony called shainey... was semi retired and belonged to a friend of mine... used to jump on with no hat!

I first rode a gypsy horse when I was 11, the guy used to let kids ride bare back for 50p and hour (1970's). I told him I could ride as I'd watched my friend have lessons then used to practice on my wall
