Do you ride bareback ?

Should be compulsory in riding lessons imo, & I think its a shame its no longer the norm for kids.

The children frequently ride bareback at my son's RS which is fab. In fact there was a lovely picture of 2 children riding a pony at the same time bareback (both children were skinny little scraps!) trotting over poles on the FB page the other day. Very refreshing in this day and age. I'm very happy that we have found this place. Believe me, standards are high, ponies are beautifully looked after and behave but are not half dead, children are expected to tack and untack ponies, and everyone has fun. :)

yes, OH and I ride the horses out bareback fairly frequently. mainly just for a change for us all, but OH did this at the end of the last hunting season... 4 mile cross country gallop and fences/hedges and a day hunting (and raised just under £2400 for charity!)!

I won't show you any pictures of the bruising!!

My quarter horse boy, yes all the time! Laughed at on the yard for "lazy girls riding" bridle straight from field, and right back out agian. He had a lovely round back, safe and comfy at at walk, trot and canter. Warmblood cross mare..sadly never; too big and too much wither.

I prefer them with plenty of wither, much as it can be more painful, particularly if you get a landing wrong. JenHunt's Ron feels much more secure than his somewhat rounder stablemate, who I just feel like I'm going to slide off the side of!

My natives yeah, sometimes. Tried it once on my tb - never again!!!!!

My dartmoor I regularly ride bareback as he is cold backed and I can't be assed waiting him out in a saddle.

^ This! As much uncomfy as my TB is, he has a good anchor if needed!

Haha justanOH that is impressive! I have actually never tried it :-O I know I know I'm missing out! My new horse is probably ideally wide being a haffy but I do imagine withers would be quite handy if you start to slip round... Don't have a saddle yet but also had injury and don't want to tempt fate! I am tempted to just hop on tomorrow, the grass is long and cushiony!

When I was younger and had my last horse I used to do loads bareback - jumping, cantering to the field etc. I used to get on him every time I caught him and canter him down the field with just headcollar and bareback. Hacked bareback a few times too when his saddle was in for restuffing.

Now I'm older though, and my girl is 16.3 HUGGEEE hunter type, I don't dare. I value my neck too much and she is too big and spooky.

I mostly rode bareback. I preferred it and my mare did too.
I also rode the 'difficult youngsters' bareback as I felt I got cues from them much better.
Nothing like bareback to really feel what your horse is going to do!

Yes, when it's raining or I can't be bothered to put the saddle on, or if it's cold.
He galloped off with me across a stubble field bareback but I always have a neck strap for tese sorts if situations!
Actually felt quite secure. Any tips for the bareback jumping? I seem to land heavy and don't want to hurt him.

I have started riding both of mine bareback on both of mine once every two weeks or so. Just walk ad trot and building up to the canter on my older one but not on the baby as I am having issues with canter with a saddle so will leave that for a while :p

I enjoy riding bareback and think it really helps your riding and balance but I only really tend to do it now when I'm having saddle problems. I always feel a bit self conscious and I don't know if people think its showing off, IYKWIM?

Yes :D I school, jump, hack around the land (not out on the road/ bridlepaths!).

Will walk, trot and canter and have jumped up to 3'9 on my pony- but it is MUCH more comfortable on a horse with longer legs!

I love bareback especially in winter steal my horses bodyheat to keep my bum warm :-)
I also always do a bit of bareback work in the paddock after sometime out of the saddle helps me stretch my legs down and regain my nice deep seat

I ride bareback from time to time, and will probably start doing it more now as I am saving up for a nice new saddle.

I can walk and trot fine but haven't dared to canter or jump yet!!

I am getting better at it, but there are occasions when I feel like I might be making it uncomfortable for him, although he doesn't seem to mind!

Can you do any damage from riding bareback all the time? Does anyone know of a horse who had a sore back or anything from bareback riding?

Mine is a Gelderlander, her trot is bloody awful to sit. I do enjoy riding her bareback but we need to do a lot more work on transitions from canter to walk. I have a Best Friend bareback pad, it's fabulous.

I haven't ridden bareback for years. I used to ride Gypsy bareback and we perfected walk to canter and canter to walk for the main reason her trot was so bouncy/ choppy I couldn't sit to it!

I'd probably ride Blossom bareback, but not so sure on the other two- they have withers!

Tried it once on my very green, rather round cob. Fab at walk, though sitting his transitions (I think launches may be a more appropriate term!) were interesting to say the least :o

I love riding my boy bareback in walk and canter just cannot do trot very well as the crown jewels object :o
Who else likes to ride bareback ? Next few weeks I am going to endeavour to ride more bareback :D

I learnt bareback and find it so much easier than with tack. I hate riding quirky horses with saddles, am a lot more unbalanced!

I also used to ride the bouncy lipizanner bareback and loved it.
Try rising on the trot, the only way I could do it for an extended period without a load of crashing around. But always easier to keep trot short.

Mostly galloped around very fast :)
