If it's just drizzling I will ride, but I wondered if it's chucking it down do you still ride because your horse needs the exercise, or do you decide that it's not fair or nice for you or the horse and call it a day?If that's the case what do you do if it rains for days on end?

Sorry if this seems a slightly dense question but I've always had the luxury of an indoor school, but now I have my own horse I only have an outdoor school like most of us I guess!

For me it depends on why you are riding - if you are looking at competing at a medium to advanced level you need to maintain your horses fitness and therefore should ride as often as possible. Otherwise I have bought my horse for enjoyment and do not enjoy riding out in pouring rain. I would stay in and give her a good groom instead.

i don't have access to any kind of school, just a field. I ride if its raining but not if its raining so bad that the ground would be dangerous. Horses gotta be exercised cause he is a fat native

i have done in the past but i hacked out and then it started raining! (was drizzling before we went!) but i hate getting wet so try to avoid it as much as possible. also at the moment my horse is always wet as she won't stay in her stable to dry off and have a rug put on! so i can't ride her anyway! i have never schooled in the rain mainly because i'm a wimp!!

Yes nothing wrong with a bit of rain!

Just stick a sheet on them and make sure you are in water proofs and you will be fine!!!

If its CHUCKING it down then I will wait till it stops a bit

Bit rain never killed anyone. I wont fource me or horse to ride into but normaly want to or feel I need to progress hes trianing. Often lunge in rain or sometimes give them that bad day off then work the rest of week regardless. If its very windy I don't hack because it can be very dangerous as hearing is really effected. I then stable them in a cosey fleece with plenty of ad-lib hay till there dry.

Cold/heavy rain no, its not worth the risk of goving them a chill.
Warm/light rain yes.
I never ride Cheekster in the rain, its not worth the hassle. Only needs light drizzle and hes sideways bound with head between kneees.

LOL yes, I got wet this morning, I thought I might miss the rain but it started as soon as I got on! I only rode because I need to get her fit though, otherwise I probably wouldn't have - I don't like getting wet unless I have to, and Shad doesn't like the rain either.

if its spitting i will still ride. If its terrnetial rain as if oftens turns into up where i am i dont bother. Tho i dont mind if it chucks it down when im already out, its if its a.lreadys raining before i set off.
If its cold and raining i wont, as neither me or my horse enjoy it, and thats the whole point of having him!

I'll ride in the rain as long as the ground conditions are not dangerous - I'm lucky to access to miles of off-road riding, but some of the steep downhills can be slippery in the rain so I tend to avoid those - Maybe I'm a bit weird - but sometimes actually enjoy riding in the rain

Yep, i got wet this morning! Don't ride if horses are wet as it can rub them with tack, so we put ours in stable for an hour with a fleece, they were dry so went for a hack round the farm in walk with rain sheets on then put their lws on this morn.

I don't actually mind the rain much - you don't tend to notice when you have your hat on unless it's really bad

but with the torrential rain we've had here for the last 3 days i've not ridden cos Ben has been wet and from being on box rest last year he's not happy to be in his stable at the moment to dry off - he gets all in a tiz - so i've given it a miss the last few days - plus he's a big baby when it rains he strops and gets really annoyed so i know it'll not get us anywhere to ride when it's raining....

Its frustrating because i am trying to ride more often than 3/4 times a week but the last month or so i've really been restricted by the weather i've also not hacked out for awhile either

wish the weather would make its mind up

I don't ride if it's torrential, or if there's any risk of a thunderstorm. Have to cross a busy road and walk for 5 mins to get to the school which is not fun in the rain, but I don't mind a bit of drizzle. I do lunge in the rain because the fatty needs the exercise.

mine too!

After hacking out today in a thunder storm i can safely say i will ride whatever. Although itwas clear when we started- if it was so heavy before i went i think i would have given it a miss.

Yes, I like it!!

It is good for my horse to be worked in the rain too - If you are outdoors at a show/event your horse has to carry on even if it rains. So in a way it is good training.
It doesn't tend to put me off TBH.

He's not a fan but I don't mind - won't deliberately go out in heavy rain but will in light rain....have ridden in sleet & snow too - would never ever ride in sleet again if had a choice in the matter!

I rode in the thunder storms so I guess yes. Although it was a bit wet he enjoyed it. At competitions you dont get to pick the weather so if your horse is used to bring ridden in all weathers you stand a better chance.

I ride whatever the weather. Its not up to me though, if the insturctor etaching the lesosn att he stables feels happy to teach in the weather then she will. But if the ride is about to start and it chucks it down we wait int he stables for it to stop sot he lesson is delayed a bit and then carry on.
