Do you ride in this weather?

I’m having trouble with guilt as I don’t fancy riding or exercising my pony in this weather. He’s not very keen on the rain either.

Does anyone else ride in this weather? Shall I suck it up or am I okay with not riding?

(He’s not been ridden since Sunday and won’t be ridden until Thursday)

What weather?! Despite the dire forecasts we've had sunshine with only scattered showers all day. Bizarre.

I ride regardless. I don't mind rain, provided it's forecast or clearly coming down - I just wear a jacket. I do object to un-forecast torrential downpours coming out of nowhere though if I'm hacking a t shirt and expecting it to stay nice!

I hired an indoor on Sunday to make sure mine got ridden ;)
I didn't ride yesterday, it was hosing down all afternoon/evening, but I was anticipating giving him a day off after travelling the day before anyway. I'm hoping to get a window today as I am away with work tomorrow.

I try to keep mine in work, the current project needs consistent work as much as possible otherwise he gets forgetful about what he's learnt so far!

We have had flooding around these parts! I don’t mind rain if I’m already riding/have already racked up etc. I just have no motivation today and I know the school will be very flooded

Your horse won't care - put it that way! So no need to feel guilty, it's meant to be fun after all.

I do tend to ride what ever the weather. I did hack out in torrential rain last night but apart from that I have managed to dodge the showers recently or pick their day's off well, if you know what I mean. It's the dark I hate more than anything and we're not quite there yet.

I've wussed out for 3 days and haven't ridden since Friday. Haven't felt great and the weather has been so wet, we are on top a hill and the wind has been like a blizzard... wouldn't usually put me off but it has. I don't feel guilty, as he doesn't care.. but worry his fitness will drop.

I'm riding this evening, once I have my mind set on riding I'll ride in any weather conditions. Ride when you feel like it, it should be fun not a chore!

No I don’t ride if it’s horrid and pouring down these days.
I ride for pleasure mainly these days and it’s not a pleasure getting soaked.

DOnt feel guilty, as winter approaches I’ll only be able to ride once a week If I’m lucky! We’ve had horrendous rain floods and wind, of course it’s dry and wind free at night ..sigh..depends where you are in the Uk as to what the weather is like, down south it’s probably still beach weather but here on top of hill it’s almost hitting 0 temps tonight..we’ll have ice and lots of v high winds, so ride if you want ..or not! Your life and choices, do what feels right!

In the week I can only ride before work in the mornings. I was planning a quiet hack this morning after autumn hunting yesterday but it absolutely poured this morning (not forecast) and I gave it a miss. It doesn't do any harm to miss it now and again but I do try to keep my horse fit for hunting which means I have to crack on regardless of the weather sometimes.

My boy doesn't care about wind or rain so in turn I don't tend to, I think if I had a spooky rain hating horse then I'd think twice. Something quite satisfying about clip clopping along in the rain! ;) Helps I have decent waterproofs though lo.l.

I try to but I sometimes give in to the weather. It was beautiful and sunny today so I went out hacking, 20 mins from home, thunder, gales and torrential rain. Won’t go back out now and the others (I have 5 in ridden work)can have a day off!

I spend all winter feeling guilty for not riding enough :) I suppose I think that 'because I don't want to' is a crappy excuse.

But then I wouldn't judge someone else to the same standards if they said the same

It's exhausting, I should just let myself off the hook!

I ride in rain and I ride in wind but I tend to draw the line if they both come in hard at the same time!

My sharp horse I try not to ride in bad wind - would lunge or put her on the walker instead. Unfortunately doing nothing with her isn't really an option so I really try to do something with her whatever the weather.

Luckily my pony doesn’t get sharp if he doesn’t get exercised every day. He’s only 6, so I don’t want to overcook him and he’s not a fan of the rain so I don’t want to ride him in it and get annoyed because he’s not going well

It is awful here! thunderstorms and heavy downpour. I wouldn't be riding in it. I do have access to an indoor school, but it also gets very busy when weather is this bad. If it is packed then I will probably not ride.

Glad you posted this! I do get pangs of guilt as well. I have lost my mojo a little bit with the dark nights and colder weather but the rain has really put the brakes on and I've not ridden when it's chucking it down. Horse gets exercised x4 a week without me, and turned out daily, so it's not so much of an issue but I do want to improve both of our fitness. I did venture out on Sunday despite the terrible forecast but actually the rain wasn't bad at all. I even took a whole change of clothes with me!

But for schooling, which is all I can do now at night, I don't feel too bad as he's ticking over in the school work as it is.

Mines been chucked out in the field for the last 3 weeks as I've been busy with other stuff. She doesnt care. Shes always happy to see me, but shes equally happy to go back out having done nothing!

We hacked this morning in drenching rain. Got back soaked but not cold thanks to good trotting. Very lovely in an empty misty landscape and mare was happy to be out.

Unless your pony has to be super fit for something then I really wouldn't worry. What do you really gain,? You don't like it, pony doesn't like it so no. Perhaps you could do carrot stretches and give him a good massage. Still very beneficial and dry!!

Unless you need to exercise the pony for weight loss, why would you even contemplate riding in the kind of weather we have had today? Unless you can ride indoors, I can't imagine you getting any decent work from the pony.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot this last week. I think I need to toughen up! I just absolutely hate the rain and wind and the thought of riding in it, particularly when everywhere is soaking and the manège has puddles in it and the fields are soaked, I just can’t bring myself to do it to be honest.

Girls have had a week off, which isn’t a bad thing as I do like to do this a few times a year, but I still feel annoyed with myself.

Yes - ride as normal. There are only four days a week when I can ride, due to work. I've got two youngsters, one who goes nuts if not worked and one who seizes up if not worked. So... it's suit up and go!

Assuming your pony has been turned out, then no, don't feel bad at all.

I purposely moved somewhere with 24/7 turn out, to take the pressure off 'having' to exercise due to limited turn out when wet. Working full time with a pony on DIY when turn out was sketchy at best in bad weather was too much so tonight, after a full on day at work, I was more than happy to bring my pony in from the field, feed, pick out feet and deposit pony back in the field before coming home for the evening. I'm sure he felt equally as glad to not have been ridden ;)

I'll probably ride in the rain at the weekend though, even if it's still raining! *Prays it not still raining*
