How ill do you have to be before you won't ride? I know some of you ride for a living, so probably your reply will be "at death's door"!

I've had a bad chest infection for about 3 weeks now, and haven't ridden for 2 because I feel so cr*p. I feel really guilty about it for some reason, but I know that it would be asking for trouble to ride my lad when I wasn't feeling 100%. (plus I can't stop coughing long enough to do anything !)

Just curious!

I would have to be pretty ill to not ride. I did once ride two horses on the same day that I'd broken a bone in my elbow, and went to casualty only after I'd ridden them

I don't ride if I'm ill because I'm a wuss!! Lol! I've not ridden for over a week as my back had gone. Just getting right again and was going to lunge/ride this aft and now its chucking it down!! Oh well will stay in and watch Hickstead!

Ill ride my chap no matter what! Did second round show jumping with the startings of flu (wouldnt of been able to hold myself on in walk a few days later!), and have ridden him with a very busted ankle twice (which he did!! Both times!

) and a very busted knee (not his fault!).
But he is a very good pony and even when he has his moments theyre funy rather than scary!
Wouldnt ride anything that was sharp or difficult unless I was 100% ish!

My TB doesn't do days off.

He can just about cope with one day off, so I have to ride. I would be happy for somone else to ride him for the day but no one will sit on him!

Over 24 hours without work = crazy neddy!

I didn't ride for a month after an op on my bladder, felt terribly guilty but my mare was quite happy with it and a good girl when we finally went out again

My daughter and I are both asthmatics and suffer bad chest infections. We try to keep going but anything more than a walk and you can't breath. If your chest is bad you know you can't ride. Just have to wait it out or you'll end up getting worse.

I don't ride if I'm under the weather as I'm a firm believer that's when it will go wrong. My boy doesn't mind the odd day or so off.

It depends how ill really.....if its just a cold I will, but if I feel really bad I wont.

In fact, my mare has hardly been ridden in the last couple of weeks as 1) I havent had time, 2) she is out 24/7 and 3) she worked really hard hunting over the winter so I think she deserves to chill for a bit!

i dont ride really from one week to another so my horses love it ,.but im lucky i can leave them for over a week and then get on and they are ok..
i avoid totally the wrong week.(ladies only) as im such a moody mare myself lol .i dont ride if its windy and even when i cant be bothered i will just muck our hay water and feed.
i know lazy isnt it,, need some one to lend a big boot up my backside.

*touch wood* I havn't been ill. The only time I don't ride is if my back is bad (like last week) or I'm injured. But I am very lucky that if I do have time off then Cropi is fine. I rode her last Monday and didn't ride again until Friday and she was as good as gold. When we go on holiday (only go once a year and normally for just over 3 weeks) she just chills, she loves it I think

I don't skive unless I'm a death's door - much to my detriment this weekend with cystitis!

Ouch.

Death's door also counts as the once or twice yearly "feeling so bad with a hangover that I can't get out of bed or my head will fall off"

I have epilepsy so only time I don't ride is when my brain is feeling wobbily. Mind you my mare is wonderful when I do have a funny turn on her so don't worry too much (I don't drop to the floor and convulse, well very rarely).

I've never missed a ride despite broken bones, flu, all sorts really! I even spent a night in hospital on a drip, discharged myself in the morning and rode in the afternoon, you name it I've done it! That was when I could only ride once a week and wouldn't have missed it for the world.

These days I probably wouldn't be quite so bonkers but I do find if its only a cold/headache etc I feel a million times a better after a nice little hack

It depends whats wrong tbh and just how bad i feel (also how badly the horse needs the work). Chesty problems i tend to just write off and wont ride.. i struggle too much to ride effectively and the whole thing ends up being a waste of time. So unless we're going somewhere or i desperatly need to tackle an issue; i dont bother.

Equally it depends how bad i feel in myself. I refuse to get on horseback if Im in a bad mood, sooo

I have had 'Flu' in the winter and cos my horse was stabled got up took paracetemol got my OH to drive me to yard. Rode horse then phoned him up and got collected went back to bed did that for about 4 days.

I also have eyesight problems from time to time so I have repeated the exercise when I couldnt see properly. Rode in the Arena and warned everyone all I could see was the change in light patterns as I could not put contact lenses in and due to advanced KC cant see with glasses.

I don’t tend to ride if I’m ill (flu not just a little cold) just because I wouldn’t enjoy it. I would just ask my sister or instructor to ride for me, or Bodes would just have a few days off.
