Might sound like a bit of an odd question, but I was in the car the other day and saw a girl riding with a pair of headphones in. Wondering if anyone does this? Struck me as a bit dangerous?
It's incredibly dangerous, and I never cease to be amazed at cyclists, runners - must admit I've not seen a rider - on busy roads, happily toddling along with their headphones on!
I'm not sure it really ought to be quite legal - surely even pedestrians/cyclists have a duty of care?
have done in the past to practice DTM in field but pone doesn't like if I have them too loud, he hates the buzz (isn't always a speaker fan) so couldn't get anything decent out of him anyway.
I def wouldn't on the road, same as you shouldn't cycle etc with them really either
I did when I was doing the early morning roadwork on a very dull, very quiet, TB - I would be driven mad if I didn't......but agree, it is not good (he was a 100% in all ways, inc traffic - and we are tralking about crack of dawn) but no, not now that I am riding out more forward going horses. What about use of the mobile phone??
I frequently ride with music on in thew school, and sometimes on hacks, on the lanes or often on the gallop etc. but then when i come home or hit a road i switch the music off, but leave the headphones plugged, as theyre really difficult to put back in when you have gloves on! Having them plugged in without sound makes absolutely no difference to my hearing.
Not on horse but when I lived south I did on my bike as the roads were so busy and lorries passed so close I didnt want to know what was trying to kill me.
I will have one ear phone in sometimes when i school, simply because it bores me (and Murphy) out of my mind, and at least if I've got music I'm inclined to carry on for a bit longer. Murphy's active imagination means I don't hear most of the things that scare him anyway, and he isn't bothered by actual real scary noises, so me listening to music doens't make a difference!
I would never wear them out hacking though, although I have been tempted. Simply because even though Murph is 100% in traffic, I like to know when things are coming so i can be aware in case a hedge decides to attack Murphy at the exact moment a vehicle passes us (it happens a lot!)
i do in skl but only in one ear, and if im hacking on owners fields. it calms me and helps me a lot. never out on road. def helped me build confidence took my attention away from horse spookin and making me nervous, does that make sense? used t sing t self but after someone at yard said they could hear me in house thought id better no sing again!
I would never ride with anything in my ears. If I ride very early I talk to my horse and although I get funny looks from passers by she seems to enjoy it and flaps her ears about. Maybe I am odd but I also play a game where I try predict what is coming up behind me just from hearing the sound of the engine, I then turn so they know I have seen them. It helps me to concentrate and also keeps me alert and my road awareness and safety has increased tenfold so my thinking is that if I blocked these sounds out by listening to music it would decrease tenfold too!
On the road? HELL NO!!! In the school? Yes I do sometimes, gives me a rhythm to work to sometimes, and keeps me chilled if things are going wrong. I like listening to music and don't see how its dangerous for schooling? I don't have it on that loud anyway, I would be able to hear if someone shouted me
If I'm schooling with someone else in there I don't, want to be able to hear them if they're talking to me.

Exactly what Murphy88 said! Only ever when I'm in the school on my own as it helps stop me getting bored and makes me ride longer! I only ever put one ear in and dont' have it blaring, so I'm still aware of rustles/squeaks/flaps and other noises around us.
Would never listen to music out hacking though, you need to be 100% aware of your surroundings with no distractions so you're able to listen out for cars/bikes/pedestrians etc.
