Do you ride XC with short or long stirrups?

I ride 3 holes shorter for SJ and XC than I do hacking and schooling.

I've only just started xc with CC

but I am the same as this ^

i agree with you TD, i hate to see that too, but i don't think length of stirrups has anything to do with it! i can do gallop work in my dressage saddle (has been known!), i just stand up in my stirrups. AN for instance rides quite long xc imho and just stands up with fairly straight legs, it's taken me ages to find a pic that shows him side-on at gallop but there's one here:

i think this contributes to his legendary stickability, he's got more leg round to grip with if necessary!

I'm no expert

but I'd imagine it has more to do with the riders balance and fitness than their stirrup length!

I like to ride short although it is painful at the moment because I am fairly unfit

lol. I feel much more secure!!!! I also ride quite short for dressage its more comfortable because I don't have the luxury of a dressage saddle.... yet

.

I ride about 3 holes shorter for show jumping then put them up a hole for x-country

ok, I'm going to defend my position here (mildly

) Kerilli, lovely photo of Andrew but he does ride short, compared to many, but also with a straightish leg - look how far out of the saddle his butt is!!! Jenbleep, it does have a lot to do with stirrup length, as it is much easier to anchor the lower leg and use it for security if the angle at the ankle and knee is more acute. The fitness and balance come into it too though because riders have indeed to be that much fitter to ride properly out of the saddle for a period of time, rather than flopping down onto their bottoms
