Do you say thank you to all drivers whilst out hacking?

I thank most drivers, all those that slow down for me. I won't thank those who don't slow down - that to me is like rewarding the dog or my horse for bad behaviour - you wouldn't do it  If someone is stupid enough to race past me then they are undoubtedly stupid enough to think they have acted correctly if I thank them imo.

Me and my 12 year old daughter do a fair bit of roadwork ( many of the old bridlepaths were signposted footpaths near us in the 70s by our lovely local Council). We thank anyone who makes an effort either slowing down and/or passing wide . I had a chap start the engine of his big 4x4 just as we were level with the front of his bonnet the other day (he was coming out of a pub car park) must admit I jumped, ned jumped so I shook my head and thought what a n*bhead ! Thankfully my girl is not spooky but something like that can send a horse into the road into the path of oncoming vehicles. He was probably over the limit or just stupid!! I have never sworn at a motorist as I don't want to be on the end of a road rage incident but I've often whispered things to myself when drivers are inconsiderate.

I usually thank everyone unless someone's been a total prat. Sometime I don't get the chance, they're gone past so quick!! Very nice people get a vocal thank you and wave and smile.

On the opposite side of this coin I once yelled a sarcastic 'you're welcome' at a group of horse riders who I'd sat patiently behind for ages. Not one of the eight or so teenagers acknowledged me at all. Some riders can be as bad as drivers!

After a long hack, I find myself thanking people when I'm driving. I must look like an twit!

I thank 99% of people. I don't thank those who pass me dangerously (too close, speeding), but if they even make a slight effort they get a big wave and if I think they'll see, I'll mouth "thank you" too.

I feel awful when I'm not able to thank. Only happened once recently, but I felt awful. They were so good and kept well back from me. I waved them on (It was clear) when something unrelated to the car or me waving scared Ned and he reared. By the time I had got him under control and moving forwards again, they had turned off :(

LOL! This ^^ Second part included. I know of a kind of old style couple who would attach a nail to the end of their stick - & scrape it right along the side of any cars who passed to close!!!!
