Horrid weather this AM. Decided not to ride - then it sort of stopped so I changed my mind and tacked up. Then it started again - got to arena and half of it was flooded - ended up just taking her round the track once and then it started peeing down again.

and then, once I'd got off and untacked it stopped!

So, does anyone ride in rain? Or is it just not worth it? Personally I prefer to hack in the rain as schooling is unproductive!

I ride in the rain....do dressage and if it rains when its your test you have to get on with it.....good way of reinforcing this with the horse at home.

i'll school in light rain, but in a howling gale or driving rain i can't see the point, as the horse won't relax and let you ride it through. i'll school a more experienced horse in driving rain occasionally, just in case i ever have to at a competition, but not a younger horse.

If its just spitting them yes.... if its chucking it down like last night then NO, neither me nor my horse will get anything useful out of it, nor would it be enjoyable!!

Of course if I had an indoor school then that would be a different matter!!

Theoretically yes - but it's hard to muster up the energy to ride after work anyway, so rain does little to help. I tend to look at the long term weather forcast, and plan my schooling sessions around that if I'm honest.

I won't start if its siling it down but with light rain I will and if it starts pouring while I'm riding then I carry on (but cringe for my saddle!). One of the best dressage tests I've ever ridden was in terrible rain!

Doesn't it often seem like the saddle being placed on your horse's back is the switch that turns the rain back on

I do........

in the indoor school, yay! We moved yards in september and its fab using the indoor its open down one side so you get the best of both, me and my sharer have ridden loads of times we probably wouldn't have at the last yard in the flooded outdoor, its great, sorry for being smug and probably very irritating

No not since our yard got an indoor school, but before that yes I did, allthough the "water jump" in the corner that flooded was a bit of a pain!

aw, I'm sure I'll end up resenting the indoor school , daily winter turnout ,small friendly set up and most of all the approachable compromising yard owner and then you'll all like me again.......

I rode last night in the pooring rain and the school was like a swimming pool - it was not enjoyable though! Just don't like to leave the horses not being worked and also as I ride for other peeps I don't want to let them down!

Titan seems to prefer being ridden in the rain!

He is so much more enthusiastic in the rain than in hot weather. I don't mind it at all. I know that Krash 'n' Burn's horse relishes wet weather and likes nothing more than showjumping on very soft ground. I don't like riding in the fog as it limits what you can do and you can't go out on the roads.

I used to think you were one of the good guys.........

Normally yes as in this country you'd end up hardly ever riding. However if it's raining hard and has been for a while and still is I don't bother as the school will be sodden and the horse and you just wouldn't acheive anything. Sunday was the first time I didn't ride because of the weather in a log time!

I don't have a school at home of any description and end up having to ride in the dark and in the rain/wind/snow or I simply wouldn't get to ride at all. As I do dressage I have to school regularly or I don't do well at my pony parties

i remember riding out once in the snow up on the moors and it was really freezing, when i got home there was a severe weather warning on tv for the area - thought it was bad

if its not windy and raining then i do, i hate it when its so windy the rain blows in your face. Also if its totally hammering down i wont.

If ive already started riding then it starts raining i will carry on.

I do worry about my tack tho, i hate it getting all wet....

I don't really notice and will happily ride in the rain (with appropriate clothing obviously!). Having said that if it's really really pouring down the horses don't tend to like it so my schooling may be a bit hopeless! I did my first ever dressage test a few weeks ago in pouring rain and survived!

depends how heavy the rain is! And how windy it is! Strong winds and light rain are often worse then heavy rain and no wind I think!

I school in every kind of weather on the basis that when I then get to a comp and the weather is vile my horse still knows he has to work. The only thing I don't do is jump in high winds, but only coz the wings won't stay up!

Sometimes I wuss out and go in the indoor school, but not often. however right now I am very glad I had decided to use the indoor for a month to make use of the mirrors as it is also keeping me dry!
