if your horse lives in for any period of time over winter, and needs rugging, do you change to a stable rug when in, or keep to turnouts and reset them ? whichever you do, why ?
I have done both
If horse has come in with a very wet rug but dry underneath sometimes i have left rug on as its dries by the morning, but mostly i have a change of rugs if stabling
I keep TO rug on when in at night, but if he was in for any length of time then i would use a stable rug. The breathable rugs are fine for using overnight in a stable. i've done this for several years with no ill effect.
Last winter I was on Part Livery and cash was tight so I used a medium weight turnout in stable that way the yardies didnt have to re-rug in am before turnout. If weather was atrocious he didnt get out anyway and I had a stablerug for backup
I have used turnouts as stable rugs but like my horses to have air everyday, I will not leave their turnouts on if they are soaked, it will make their beds wet.
Stable if in for a long time, but turn out overnight, particularly if wet. I have breathable ones. Important to keep checking for rubs IMO, but have never had a problem. I first started letting him go overnight in stable in turn out rug when I kept finding rug still wet and cold when i needed to put it on in the morning.
When mine come in at night I usually change their rugs over for stable ones. Apart from the days when I have to be at work the next day, then they stay in their turnouts so the next morning I can literally chuck them in the field and rush off to work.
I use Rambo rugs and I've never had any problems using them inside. The only difference between the turnout and stable rugs is just the waterproof outer and a couple of extra straps. Rambo rugs are fully breathable so they should stay nice and comfortable in them.
Horse I used to share was stabled overnight in her turnout rug, it rubbed, didn't dry any quicker and she was turned back out in the same rug so effectively wore it 24/7 for the whole of the winter. She didn't settle very well in her box at night. Even when rug was soaking wet, muddy and leaked on her shoulders/down neck she was left in it... wasn't very cosy for her
New horses I look after have stable rugs, much nicer IMO, not as heavy as turnouts and it helps them settle into a routine if they come in, have rugs changed, tea given then tucked up for the night.
Oh and if the turn out rugs are wet I tend to leave them on as well because they dry out much easier.
If you take them off the wetness seems to seep through to the lining and makes that damp.
turnouts - saves lots of time, wet rugs dry very quickly on the horse, and why take a horse out of a nice warm rug and put a cold one on?? also t/o's are much more durable, stain resistant - poo gets washsed off in the rain- and are breathable these days anyway - so i don't faff about rug changing in the morning -mind you,i'll only have 1 stabled this winter so a big big difference on time!!
fal and rambo are dual purpose, warm light dry quickly dont rub , breathable. mine live in theirs 24/7. fat and shiny and warm and saves hours. a plus is their rugs never smell as rain keeps them clean.

It sounds like she had a pretty crap rug TBH. My horses are always lovely and warm and dry inside their rugs and there is no leakage issues.

Same here. I like to change them over to reduce any pressure/rubs in the same place. I don't have anywhere to dry wet rugs though so if they are wet, they stay on and get centrally heated

I'll swap over, she'll be standing in her TO when I arrive about 5pm (brought in at 4ish) and I'll whip rugs off and ride (oo I'm quite excited about the thought of clipped horse and winter schooling
) then I'll tuck her up in a big stable rug
Purely because her TO is quite heavy, its great, but when it's wet, it'll be nicer for her to have a lighter but warm stable rug on. Also she gets rubbed easily, so it will hopefully change pressure points etc.
Agree good quality and fit is really important. I also have a couple of good rugs (1 Fal and 1 Rambo), so I swap occasionally too. I really don't think sleeping in good quality turnouts is a problem.
I love the site of my two snuggled up in there Pj's! I always swap there rugs from turnout to stable rugs when they come in at night. Ok it takes an extra 5 mins in the morning, but who cares!!! I have good quality turnout and stable rugs, but still change them as I like doing it this way!
I have used both. I kept wet TOs on my horse overnight and also taken them off and used the rug dryer and found he dried them out a lot quicker. It saves a lot of time and washing of stable rugs. However I do like to swap into a stable rug so he isn't in the same rug all the time, hopefully it will change the pressure points etc.
Oooooh - I am so pleased to have read this thread.
I was always taught that if the horse was dry and warm underneath, then leave the TO on as it will dry quicker on the horse than off.
However, I have just looked a very posh new livery yard and was told that turn out was £2.50 or £4 if rug change needed. When I said I left the horse in the same rug, the looks I got implied I was a v v v v evil owner...!
As stated, unless the horse is wet underneath, I leave the TO on.
Out of interest, does anyone use summer sheets or such like under them? I tend to so I can wash the under rug once a week but have always wondered what everyone else does?
most of the time we keep them in TO, but over weekend when they are in a bit longer and it's me rather than little slightly nervous mum doing them then we put stable rugs on. plus After hunting the stable rugs fit better over the fleeces.
I normaly stable over night with a stable rug, but if they come in with soaking wet rugs i'll leave the TO rugs on over night as they dry out quicker and better that way, as i hate having to put on cold wet rugs the following moring, and don't think it can be nice for the horse either.
Definitely leave turnouts on, but on the proviso they are really good quality well fitting ones (for me that means Rambo only!). If I had the cheaper turnouts then I would probably change to stable rugs.
