As the title says really.

After my boy came down on me on some dodgy ground I has always studded him for hunter trials and teams chases. We are about to start hunting and wondered if you stud or not? I normally use a medium pointed stud.

no i'd not - you'll prob do some road work so not suitable to stud

i put road (tungston tip) nails in my horses shoes over winter and don't bother with stud holes - pay for them again in spring ready for HT/XC etc

nope never too much up and down roads. the most you will get is if ur farrier will put mushroom studs in but i wouldnt really advise on these either unless absolutly neccessary as they can cause pressure points and alter the angles of bones ligaments and tendons in the foot.

Never because of all the above people have said and also if your horse happens to kick someone (even the best behaved can sometimes) you will do an awful lot of damage if you have studs in. Also if by any chance you jump on someone who has had a fall you could again do alot more damage to them with studs. Please for other peoples sake, don't put studs in.

Wow! I thought this thread was about something else entirely! Was going to say I have a nice trailer with deep straw onthe floor...etc...

However: No, just road nails at two each shoe - other studs wiould be a waste..

When I think what my excited chestnut mare woulld have done in 'stilettos' as she cantered up the road with the rest of the excited field... lol. Def a no; just not an option as per everyone else's comments. There was a good piece in the Dog and Donkey about hunting specific injuries a while back. Had some good suggestions if I remember rightly.

I'm sure your horse will be fine and hopefully you'll have good going.

Enjoy and have a blast for me!

*My girl is broken!*

Thank you all for your replies. We went out (without studs) and had a wonderful time. Going back out again next Sat.

Had the farrier last week and didn't have stud holes put in, will wait for the TC season to start back up. My bank account is a tiny bit happier :)
