Do you take your dog everywhere?

I like to take Cecil places I feel will be beneficial to him. He’s been team chasing and recently point to pointing. I think this is a good socialising outing.
I have a friend who’s dog gos to work, to tescos, clothes shopping etc but stays in the car. Personally I feel my dog would be happier at home in these circumstances.
I’m going to Badminton and am *considering taking him. It’s a long time to leave him home but not totally sure yet.
Where do you take your dogs?

More or less, yes I suppose. But never shopping. I can’t bare to see dogs left in a car.

I don't take them anywhere to leave them in the car or locked in a stable etc so only if it's fun mostly.

We try and take ours to places we feel she would enjoy. She comes to horsey events etc. Hate leaving dogs in the car, you never know who's waiting to pinch them ?

I was about to say 'you can take dogs to Tescos?!' then read it properly I wouldn't feel happy leaving Ivy in the car unattended. A quick pop in to shop and out, and certainly not on even a slightly warm day, I could sort of understand but not for proper shopping.

We're lucky in that Ivy really does not mind being home alone and snoozing all day so there's less pressure to have to take her out with us, but we are trying to get her used to different places and we do enjoy her company for some things. She's been to pubs/restaurants/cafes, on the train to London (Waterloo station with a timid Greyhound was a big ask but she did a great job), and today to her first ODE (see my earlier post ) I wouldn't take her to Badminton, it's a long day and soooo busy. But also I don't want to go to Badminton any more because of how busy it is!

She comes to the yard with OH and they walk with me when I hack sometimes which is nice. She doesn't come to the yard otherwise, no need really and she'd prefer to be in her own bed at home than shut in anywhere else.

Generally yes, she comes to yard, trips out in the horsebox, office etc, and often to the weekly food shop out of town- as the car park is ground floor with food store above - so it's cool there.
Never to busy events, tho to be fair I rarely do these. She's quite elderly and happy to be left at home in the daytime if necessary but oddly, not in the evening.

Mine used to come to the yard and trips to Pets at Home etc, maybe to the local shop if I was posting something, but I’d never leave them in the car if I was going to the supermarket. I don’t see the point, they’d be happier at home. I thought before we got them that I’d have them meet loads of people outside shops, but I think it would be far too much for their little brains.

Last summer locally a dog was stollen from a car so the heat side of things aside it’s something I just don’t do, I have stopped for fuel and ran in to pay but was like a nervous wreck in the queue!
I’m torn on the badminton thing. Daughters dog would either come or stay so he’d have company either way. The pointing got surprisingly busy and he coped amazingly.
I like him coming with me but it would all be weather dependant. Also only places he can come out with me and walk not sit and wait.

Agree. I remember once calling into a coop and meeting my dads dog tied up outside. Horrified

We take ours to.places that we think they will enjoy going to, not to leave them in the car.
We teach them to stay at home happily, as well as to go to various places, including cafes, care homes, other people's houses, Pets at Home, quieter shows and events.

I would never take a dog to Badminton or anywhere super crowded. I take them to point to points and things, but not all of them. I try to give each one individual outings and attention when I can. Tomorrow I’m stewarding at a sponsored ride and will take the two youffs.
I never leave them in the car.

I’m very tempted by a group dog walk with a behaviourist session advertised by our local shelter. It’s next Saturday which is a bit awkward and the only thing putting me off. Not that he has issues but I think it might be fun, social and interesting. He does occasionally meet something he randomly dislikes so I’d like to get pro opinions on that.

My terrier generally comes with me where ever I roam, including work. Shopping in suitable weather she can stay in the car, I use it as an opportunity for a different walk (nearest supermarket is 17 miles away) and family visits. She gets the right hump if she thinks she is missing out on a car ride. She also gets the hump if I get the hair drier out as she knows I am leaving her for an evening. She is currently confined to barracks with a litter of puppies and it feels very weird to be separated. A friend had a terrier, also a constant companion, who uses to chew up her make up if she was left at home alone. She obviously blamed the make up for taking her mum away.

Yes, I’m paranoid about the dogs being stolen from the car. So would never go to the supermarket and leave them in the car.

When I take the dogs to the horses, I have to leave them in the car whilst I poo pick as the only one I trust to be loose around them is the husky. I don’t take them if it’s hot, and they are safe in the car whilst I poo pick etc. We then go for nice long walk in the woods. Holidays are planned with the dogs, and we often go out and about of a weekend with them.

I wouldn’t take them somewhere like Badminton as Bo is anxious of people, and it’s not somewhere OH would want to go anyway, so they would be quite happy home with him.

I’m paranoid about the house being broken into and the dogs stolen whilst we are out, so wouldn’t leave them in the car whilst shopping.

I don’t leave her in the car so don’t take her shopping. But she comes to the yard with me and has done smaller events like Wellington. UK holidays she comes with and we plan the holiday around her really. Abroad she goes to stay with mum.

I contemplated Badminton but if the traffic is bad getting in then it’ll be 2+ hours in the car each way and she’ll probably have more fun snuggled with OH on the sofa at home.

We’ve always taken dogs to Badminton and other big events. They've always loved it. But the whole trip revolves around them. We carry lots of water and snacks for them. We stop regularly. We keep them in the shade if we can. My 6’4 husband keeps to the back of any crowds at fences while I go to the front to watch (he can see over people!). If we have to walk through crowded crossings we walk with one of us in front of the dogs, one behind, so they don’t get crowded by other people. We NEVER take them in the middle of the trade stands on Xc day (I usually go without them on dressage day and shop then, or we camp). We also ALWAYS have harnesses as well as leads, so they’d never get loose if one broke (not that they’d chase a horse anyway, they’d go straight for someone’s picnic!). I do notice a lot of people dragging dogs round without much thought to how they’re coping.

Our journey is 3hrs each way, but they’re good travellers and sleep all the way quite happily.

Pepper goes everywhere with me! Obviously not when warm but I happily leave her in the car for an hour or two at a time, she has a big crate now (I’ve travelled her loose until recently but got fed up of her doggifying the whole boot). It’s big enough that it had three spaniels in it today ?

I would only leave her unattended in car in a busy area aka where it would be hugely noticed if car alarm went off and someone was trying to break in. To me that’s pretty much as safe as can be, and probably safer than my house frankly.

She comes to yard, comes hacking, comes to every event. I did this with her from day one and So she is super biddable. I can put a rug/coat/anything down anywhere for her and tell her it’s her bed and she will happily snooze and watch the world go by.

If I was simply going food shopping for an hour and back I’d obviously leave her at home, but if I was going after being somewhere else like the yard then she’d naturally be there too.

I am very much of the opinion that dogs would much rather be with you than alone, so if you can make them easy to have around then that’s a happier dog! I see so many people whose dogs can’t just go with them because they haven’t really bothered to train them to be able to do that, so they are hectic and stressed.

That said I wouldn’t take any dog to something like badminton. Stressful enough as a human in crowds.

Rew goes to a fair amount of places, at just a year old he spent a fair amount of puppyhood asleep in the car when I was at work with occasional pee breaks around the car park, he was generally mildly fed up to be woken up. I now wfh so he’s under my desk ? he’s been on holiday with us in a rented camper van, stayed with mil on day care, gone to a friends kennels and lived in her house with her dog whilst we were away, goes walking on the moors and beaches. If I need to go shopping he will happily snooze in the boot, dog guard in place. Most recently he’s been to park run when I marshalled, watching 100+ runners go past is quite a test for a lurcher but he wasn’t interested.
There was also the occasion when we went through a car wash which got caught on the tow hitch, brought the whole thing to a shuddering halt and left us waiting, he was alert but not fussed (in pic!)

He also has a fair share of staying home in his cage, when he snoozes the day away.

Ours travel well and happily, most of our outings are with them. The pinnacle was when they were invited to be bridesmaids at a family wedding 5 hours away. They did go back into the car for the reception, but were on a local person's drive and the windows are blacked out in the back. The biggest problem was finding a b&b that accepted three dogs, when one was a rottweiler. We would have stayed with the wedding party but they were a bit full!

Mine goes pretty much everywhere with me. And I'm quite happy to leave him in the car for an hour or two. He has a big nest made of duvets and blankets on the passenger seat and another bed in the back so he can stretch out. He loves going in the car and has done it from being tiny. It never occurred to me not to take him.

My vehicle is kitted out to travel, boxes, foil shields, ventlocks etc and they have been all over British Isles and Europe.
Not really the stealing type and they would likely kick up a stink.
Have been to busy events/the shops but I pick my battles/think about the weather/value of any trip.
I used to think nothing of doing a ten hour round trip to train with certain people.
But I was out all day today and they stayed home as it wasn't dog appropriate so I just did walks earlier and later than normal.
I think it's good to train 'nowhere' journeys. My Mum's dog only goes to SUPER FUN places in the car and is an absolute nightmare.

My dogs go everywhere I go. I don’t leave them in the car in hot weather but they’ve no problem being left for an hour or so when it’s cool. I don’t tend to go to really busy or crowded events but we do go to the local Agri shows and such like and they love being wherever I am. I feel fortunate that I can take them everywhere with me.

One of mine who i’ve only owned for a year has awful separation anxiety so tends to come with me most of the time. It’s odd that she’s fine being left in a car but not in the house. My car has blacked out windows at the back and she’s black so isn’t noticed.

I wouldn’t leave my JRT in my car as I worry she’s going to get stolen. She loves people so I take her whenever I think she’d enjoy it I can take her most places and she genuinely enjoys making friends with people. She’s been on trains, boats and even an open top bus tour round Edinburgh.

I would love to take our lab to Badminton but strangely he refuses to eat or drink when he's out of the house. We couldn't risk him not drinking on a hot day. He's fine if we holiday in a caravan and very well behaved with other dogs, he ignores them and strangers.

depending on the weather my dogs go with me. I have sun screen sheets, fans and water buckets in their crates. I also have a vent lock which I use while we're out tracking and we're in a public park.
Lately it has been pretty warm and we're just hanging around the house. The back garden has a good amount of shade and a wading pool so they can cool off. Wednesday it is supposed to be cooler so I'll take them for a good walk after agility class. Rudy will have to wait in the car for that time but he'll be OK.

Ours doesn't go everywhere with us, but if my daughter had her way she probably would. She does come to the pub with us if we are going for a drink, but not if we are having a meal. She does go to some horsey events, and stayed at Gatcombe with us, which isn't too crowded. However I wouldn't take her to Badminton, as we like to go round the shopping village and I think it is too crowded for her. Also, being selfish I just want to go and enjoy the event without having to worry whether the dog is too hot, too cold, thirsty etc.! She is quite happy at home and if all of us are out for a long time then we either have someone let her out for a toilet break or she goes to a friend's house for the day.
