I always take my mums dog with me and would like to take my dog but she's still a bit young and crazy and Badger hasn't really taken to her yet (he tries to stomp on her head if she goes in his field

) so I'm just a bit worried it might end in tears. On the other hand I know she would love it and it would be great because it might actually tire her out!!

Just wondered who else takes their dog out and if you've ever had any treading on/kicking incidents??

I don't take mine very often as she is a bit erm... thick

Once I am mounted I will let her come down the fields with me, although I wouldn't take her on the roads. She has an annoying habit of trying to nip my pony whenever I vault on though so I tend to leave her at home LOL!

Whenever I am outside not riding though she is with me all the time

Yep always.

My young shepherd and my bouncy springerXcollie always come out riding with me. My old collie stays at the farmhouse as she can't keep up any longer.

NEVER EVER!!!!! If I was lucky enough, like Tia, to own all the land I rode on then yes, absolutely would. But I never take my dog as even tho we have private hacking it is NOT my land and therefore the dog *should* be on a lead.

I don't take my dog (don't have one), but the farm dogs usually come out. They usually get out the way of the horses, but had a few near misses when they've been distracted by something on the ground and only just gotten out of the way in time. Chex hates the dogs in his field, but he's fine on a hack.

I did, BUT, Timber (a GSD) is outrageous and will insist on nipping the fetlocks of my horse (even though he has suffered a direct hit to head once before with 9 stitches etc). Will try again but I doubt he has learnt is lesson!

Nope, my two GSD are a pain they try to herd the horses

and biscuit tends to go for their legs, she did manage to bite one once and got a kick but it never taught her anything ,

Same as Weezy. Just dont think it is safe (or legal) unless you have your own land.

But would add my bitch is scared of horses!!! Not sure about dog- he is just stupid!! Panics if he cant see mummy! So no definitely wouldnt!

Also I have enough difficulty with horse let alone two mastiffs who only do what they are told when it is in their own interests!!

i dont have a dog now but when i was a kid i had an irish wolf hound who always came out with me! he was on a lead (the expandable ones on the length it was needed) as the pony i had was a dope on a rope and the dog was brilliant with horses he just used to run along the side of my pony and loved it

I mainly ride in woods and stuff so not much damage to be done.

The land I ride on is owned by my YO and she, rightly, as is the law, enforces that all dogs on her land MUST be on leads. The land is also farmed and chemicals ARE used, therefore lead is a must.

When I walk my dog in the fields that back onto my house, no, she is not on the lead, but the farmer that owns that land is happy for dogs to be off lead and he does not use any chemicals, so I know my dog is safe

Really smug but I take my border terrier out riding with me, also often a doberman x, chocolate lab, jack x, yellow lab too and a black lab all together!

We are riding on private land. However, the lab, jack and border are used to the horses and basically follow to heel. The horses are so used to them them that they are totally dog proof.

I must admit that I love nothing more than riding out with the dogs milling around us, it is so satisfying.

MY oldest dog used to come out with me on my old pony if we went for a canter he insisted on running in front and looking back at me?! But it is not an option now as we have good hacking but we are quite close to the speedy lanes. I do sometimes take them to the beach with horses.

I take my lurcher out with me occasionally, but only on a ride where there is no roadwork and no livestock, although she is fine and stays to heel if told to. Also usually out very early in the morning or last thing so unlikely to meet anyone else (she can be a bit "iffy" with other dogs). I love taking her out for a lovely long ride first thing on a summer (! ha ha!) morning while it's still cool, and all 3 of us (me, horse and dog) go home happy!

Used to take my old spaniel, but sadly she is gone now. Have a rather wild greyhound now, so no I don't as she would run off very fast after any other living creature !! Leave her to have a sleep while I ride.

Never. We went out for a hack, and Suki managed to escape the yard and found us. Turned to take her home and she was hit by a car, twice. (He carried on driving)
Was the most awful scene, left the horses with tracy and scooped her off the road. So much blood

Flagged a car down and took her to vets, was touch and go whether she kept her foot. Skin grafts and huge bill later, she is ok, just scarred.
Not worth it, ever.

Puppy always used to come with me, but she's too old now

I do miss having her with us. She waits in the tack room snoozing

I used to take the old yard dog, a black lab. But he was seriously well trained (although there was that incident with the fish pond!) and would come to heel even while I was on the horse and would walk on the pavements etc not down the middle of the road.

He was so well known that if he got tired he would stop off at someones house and come home later on his own.

He was a wanderer anyway so he'd have gone wether I was there or not so safer to be with me than wandering about on his tod!
