Do you talk on your phone whilst out hacking?

After a few posts I've seen about riders talking on their phones whilst out riding, it got me thinking how many of you would answer a call while you were out on a hack?

I would and have spoken on the phone whilst hacking. However It does depend where I am. If I am on a bridle path or fields I will quite happily answer my phone. If I am on a quietier road I will answer then tell them I will ring straight back. However If I was on a busy road I wouldn't answer it, my attention should be on my Horse and the traffic only.

Your thoughts?

I remember once having a good canter up a hill and my phone rung, It was my mum asking me would I like her to make me dinner. Carried on cantering whilst discussing what options she had :p

I use a bluetooth ear thingy when riding etc so can talk and do stuff at the same time. Wouldn't be without it.

I don't because i have a spooky youngster and basically dont want to drop it!
I have done in the past on bridleways on a quiet horse but wouldn't do on the road.
The people that matter know i'm out riding so don't call anyway or text instead :)
It really annoys me seeing young kids out on the road texting or on the phone on main roads oblivious to the traffic and not thanking anyone for slowing down! Grr!

Me too, have canterted down the field talking to my mum and dad :) obviously I wont answer the phone if Im on a busy road or the beach etc, but yes I would answer the phone if I felt I could. Very lucky as I have a quite a safe, laid back horse who is very good. I wouldnt use my phone if riding someones elses horse and didnt feel quite as relaxed.

Not unless I thought it was urgent - ie if someone had rung me loads in a short period of time.

Personally, I think it is rude and chavvy if a rider is doing it along a road. I had a bit of an altercation with a rider local to my yard (but not from my yard) when she was so busy chatting on the phone she didn't see a car coming towards her even though I had tried to warn her. I then told her if she spent more time looking where she was going than on her phone, things like that wouldn't happen. I got a rude reply not surprisingly. Grr.

I have less of a problem should a rider not be on the road though.

All the time, and text too. What's the problem? It is not against the law, like it IS for driving. I see lots and lots of people on their mobile when driving which is illegal.

I answer when off road & if I am on road I will just answer & say I am riding so will call back. I do have my phone on silent/vibrate so if I am on road & its busy I can ignore it without the music playing. I won't answer while cantering as if it's important they will keep calling or I just quickly call back when I have stopped.

No, never. Not just because I think it's unsafe, I want to pay my full attention to the horse and enjoy my surroundings. Also it allows me to enjoy a bit of peace and quiet without my phone going off!

There's odd times where I've had to make a call or answer one but obviously somewhere where it's safe to do so, but usually I don't, basically because I can't be bothered :p plus it means faffing around getting it out of my pocket, I've got a bluetooth head set which I've used in the past which I've completely forgotten about, suppose I should dig it out and use it really.

What do you think a driver thinks when he sees a rider texting on the road?

Drivers are bad enough these days, no wonder riders get a bad reputation when people are too busy texting or talking to thank drivers for slowing down, whether your horse is bombproof or not, the next one they pass could be a youngster who isn't.

Quite frankly, I am not bothered what drivers think of me. I never disobey the law when I drive and never use my mobile when driving. It is not my fault riders have a bad reputation. Actually, I was unaware that riders have 'a bad reputation', is that really true? Round here, everyone knows my horse and I; we get smiled and waved at and people drivers to say how lovely he is etc. I thank all who slow down and smile. It's not like I'm texting continuously! It was rather presumptuous of you to think I do not thank drivers for slowing down!

I don't think it looks chavy at all. But I do agree it would be very rude of a rider not to take the time to say thanks to drivers because they are to preoccupied in their phones.

For starters that wasn't aimed at just you and i didnt say YOU don't thank people but some riders don't cause they are too busy chatting or texting, which reflects on the rest of us.
I do care what drivers think of me, that one rider they pass that ignores them sets the tone for the lot, yes its not our fault but the more they pass who are courteous and grateful the better.

I once had a chat with an ex while cantering round one of the tracks - he had to get to work and I had to get by before dark :p

I don't tend to unless I think it's important and it's safe - i.e. on a track. My hacking buddy is often on call while we're hacking so has to answer. She was noting down a number and on the phone while walking down a track the other week - I was quite impressed by her multitasking :D

But yes, on a very busy road or on an unreliable horse, bad idea...

You're right, the more of us who take time to thank, the better for all riders. I shall continue to thank, as no doubt you will too!

Not unless I have to, I don't have anyone to chat to anyway, lol!

I do have a nice little lane where I call my mum and ask her to come and get me :P It takes me the exact time from calling, to get back and untack, to her arriving :P

I saw a photo of my friend riding on the road and she appeared to be texting. I asked whether she was, and she indignantly replied, "No! Certainly not! I was rolling a fag...."

Now that's chavvy. :D:D:D

I only do in the arena. I have a spooky horse who relies on my consistent contact when hacking. Also he is only just being retrained so in a field if i give him a free rein he likes to speed up. Have nearly dropped my phone lots just in arena. Jod pockets too tight to get phone out easy!
